Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé - First seat trial

With the new GLE Coupé, Mercedes-Benz wants to make up for lost ground against the inventor of the SUV Coupé class. While the number two generation was already presented in Munich, the people of Stuttgart waited until the NAIAS 2015 to present their own full-size SUV coupé.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé celebrates its world premiere in Detroit and at the same time heralds a new nomenclature for the type designations. The Mercedes ML becomes the GLE and thus the SUV in the E-Class. From the GLK, Mercedes creates the GLC and thus the SUV in the C-Class. And this new nomenclature will also be retained upwards: the GL becomes the GLS.

In addition to the new series, you will have to get used to new engines. The GLE Coupé 450 AMG not only gets a new model and displacement designation, it is also the first “AMG sports model” in the Mercedes vehicle range. In addition to pure AMG models such as the just as freshly presented GLE Coupé 63 S AMG, a Mercedes-AMG, there will be more than a dozen vehicles at Mercedes-Benz in the future, which will be assigned to the Mercedes-Benz brand as “AMG sports models” and thus close the often large gap between the production models and the AMG vehicles. In the case of the current GLE Coupé top model, one speaks of a V6 bi-turbo with 367 hp. These include the 333 hp GLE Coupé and the only diesel in the range for the time being, the GLE Coupé 350d 4matic.

2015 becomes Mercedes-Benz 30 years 4matic celebrate and the GLE Coupé is just the beginning of the SUV festival at Mercedes-Benz this year. With the facelift, Mercedes will turn the ML into the GLE and the GLK will receive its successor. A whole new GLC. With the GL, Mercedes will initially only take a gentle hand and carry out a model upgrade.

But now it's time for a first seat test:

There's room in the smallest hut? The GLE Coupé is 4.90 meters long, over two meters wide and 1.73 meters high. Such a large car simply needs powerful wheels and therefore 20 inch wheels are part of the basic equipment. The AMG model even comes up with 21 inch wheels.

Such a big car has to offer a lot of space inside, you think. What is confirmed in the first row behind the steering wheel looks the same in row two. The flat roof arch, the typical coupé shape, clearly cuts the rear entrance. I am not the tallest at 1.76 meters - but as you can see from the photos, the headroom is rather average. The rest of the new GLE Coupé is quickly told:

At first glance, the design looks primarily, well - let's stick to the description: takes some getting used to. Thanks to the large glass panorama roof, however, a lot of light floods the interior, which helps to ignore the narrow roof arches and small side windows. With a trunk volume of up to 1.650 liters, the GLE Coupé is a decent burden donkey. Even if these skills are probably less likely to be on the agenda for future owners. If the worst comes to the worst, Mercedes still offers a trailer hitch, which for the first time retracts and extends fully electrically.

The main task of the new GLE Coupé, however - depending on how powerful the engine turns out - should be the dignified show drive on the promenade of this world. Pusemuckel is probably not the main sales market for the distinctive SUV in the Lower Saxony province. The GLE Coupés of this world will follow the path that the competitor followed. In the country of its world premiere, the USA, Russia and Asia. There one likes the less discreet implementation of strength and prosperity. Because that is exactly what the GLE Coupé embodies very clearly.

For this exciting journey, the Mercedes men have now given the GLE Coupé the first combination of nine-speed automatic and 4matic all-wheel drive. While the GLE Coupé with diesel engine and the 333 PS V6 variant of the GLE 400 rely on a 50:50 all-wheel drive, the "sports model" GLE 450 AMG Coupé with a 40:60 split all-wheel drive is given a rear-heavy and therefore probably more dynamic reason -Set up. On request, the chassis can be dampened by air suspension and, for the first time, also on board: a fully variable damper identification with the designation ADS Plus. The GLE 450 AMG (member of the new AMG sports model family) already has this technology in series.

Of course, nothing is felt during the first seating test. Today, space, clarity and the new design of the center console are the focus here. Already parked on the stage of the premiere hotel, one would rather not drive the new large SUV coupé backwards.

The drive with a view to the future should be all the more exciting.
