5 electric cars for vacation

Short range, slow charging speed: Many electric cars are not suitable for long distances. But there are also counterexamples.

E-cars are not necessarily the first choice when it comes to going on vacation. Depending on the destination and route planning, many models are definitely suitable for the holiday tour. In addition to range and charging speed, space, accessories and the performance of the navigation device are also important. Five model proposals.

Ford Mustang Mach-E ER - The price-range winner

With a standard range of up to 610 kilometers, the American electric SUV is among the top group in absolute figures. Especially if you disregard the pure premium providers. Unlike these, however, the five-seater remains well below the 60.000 euro mark even in the long-range extended range variant. Other plus points as a touring car are the airy space, the trunk, which is large in a class comparison despite the coupé design, and the fast charging capacity of 150 kW. However, you have to be able to tolerate the fairly hard chassis.

Mercedes eVito Tourer Pro 90 kWh – The loading master

If you want to take a rubber boat and family barbecue with you on holiday in addition to clothes and children's toys, the best thing to do is to take a bus. However, most models only offer very short ranges. With 370 standard kilometers, the Mercedes is currently the only one in the segment that is available in holiday regions. With a charging capacity of up to 110 kW, refueling is also possible at a tolerable speed. The disadvantage is the comparatively high basic price of just under 65.000 euros.

Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo – The fast loader

With a charging capacity of 270 kW, the electric station wagon is currently the fastest Stromer to the socket. At least in Germany, the network of suitable charging stations is already well developed, so that the speed is not only achieved in theory. The manageable range of 456 kilometers is therefore not an obstacle for long-distance travel in this country. The high price of a good 94.000 euros is more likely.

BMW iX xDrive50 – The tractor

For a long time there were no e-cars with a trailer hitch at all. There are now numerous models available, but for many the hook is more or less only suitable for attaching a rear bicycle carrier. The Munich luxury class SUV, on the other hand, can also pull trailers up to 2,4 tons. The standard range should not even come close to being reached. But since this is 630 kilometers, there is quite a bit of reserve. The price of around 100.000 euros is more problematic.

Volvo XC40 Recharge Single – The connected one

In addition to a high level of safety, the Swedish compact SUV offers a high-quality interior with Scandinavian chic, reasonable ranges (424 kilometers) and decent space. One of its biggest pluses is the Android-based infotainment system. Google technology is fast and clever, which is particularly useful when planning routes and charging using the seamlessly integrated "Maps" app. Especially in contrast to the unconvincing electronic navigation systems of some competitors. Prices start at just under 50.000 euros.

What else needs to be considered

If you go on holiday with an e-car, you have to plan more carefully than with a tour with a diesel or petrol engine. Within Germany or in the Netherlands, France and Austria, the charging network is now well developed in most regions, and many tourist locations have also already provided infrastructure. In Eastern Europe in particular, the situation can be significantly worse.

It is not only in such cases that a safe socket at the holiday property helps. Most hotels now offer charging stations, but often only a few. With holiday home portals on the Internet, the search can now often be limited to accommodations with their own charging station.

If you don't have a charging station in front of your door, you can create security with a mobile wall box. The most flexible, albeit most expensive choice is the Juice Booster 2, which is available from around 850 euros. There are numerous different adapters for numerous national sockets, camping and three-phase current connections as accessories. This is particularly worthwhile for frequent trips to other European countries.

If you mainly charge at public columns, you should check the tariffs both when traveling in Germany and abroad. Perhaps a cheaper contract can be concluded for the stay. In some cases it can also happen that there are no roaming columns on site, so that the German charging card does not work at all and you should look for an alternative early on.
