Before using disc springs to separate the clutch, it was coil springs that were intended for this work. High spring rates in the coil springs were necessary for the relatively short separation paths within the coupling. The clutches of the early automotive years were correspondingly stiff. That changed with the diaphragm spring. With the diaphragm spring, the spring properties are distributed over a wider area, and the forces for use could be minimized.

With a wink, LuK looks back on this invention at the 50th anniversary. What is unthinkable today was quite normal in the past. It was advertised that from then on the wife could also drive. Because with a diaphragm spring from LuK, the beetle was suddenly much easier to shift.

The Volkswagen Beetle was then the first vehicle in which the disc spring came onto the market in large series.
