50 years LuK: What does a link chain actually do?

[=” ” ]50 years LuK, 50 years of innovation. The Schaeffler brand LuK celebrates 50's history this year, looking back on 50 years of innovation. Time and opportunity for mein-auto-blog to experience the milestones of the LuK inventions!

In cooperation with LuK.

10 invited guests, including the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, a big party for employees and friends, a whole weekend of celebrations in Bühl. 50 years of LuK, 50 years of innovations made in Germany. And one of the innovations “made in Bühl” is the link chain.

What is a link chain and what do you need it for?

The meaning of this link chain is quickly explained. There are two basic types of gearbox: the manual gearbox and the automatic gearbox. There is another distinction between automatic transmissions: there are automatic converters, double clutch transmissions and continuously variable transmissions. Incidentally, LuK has an idea for all transmission types - but back to the link chain.

In the case of continuously variable transmissions, also called CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), two opposite bevel gears with variable widths determine the change in the transmission ratio. Small radius versus large radius on the other side. So one side turns faster than the other. In order to connect both bevel gears and create a frictional connection, people who remembered the DAF Variomatic used to drive backwards as fast as forwards - a rubber belt. However, when the desire in the automotive industry was to combine the increased comfort of the CVT - there are no shift stutters without gear jumps - even with powerful diesel engines, the belt drive reached its limits.

The solution came from Buhl. The technicians of the company LuK constructed the link chain. With these links made of metal and connected to a chain, it was possible to process forces up to 400 Nm with the CVT.

Audi presented this transmission in the Audi A6 with the 2.5 liter TDI - and from then on Elvis was unemployed:

The Audi advertising back then made clear the advantages of the CVT - the Ingolstadt-based company called the transmission extremely strikingly "multitronic" - and Jana also found this Elvis in Bühl.

Who more about Jana and the If you want to find out more about “Laschenkette”, you can watch it on YouTube the video to 😉
