When driving, avoid sharp acceleration, abrupt changes in direction, and heavy braking to minimize grip loss on snow or ice.
Same winter tires
For optimal traction and safety, it is important that all four tires are identical. It is best to always use four winter tires of the same brand and type. The tires on an axle should always have the same size, the same profile type, age and tire profile depth. If permitted, studded tires must be fitted to all four rims. Information on the load capacity and speed category of the tires to be used can be found in the vehicle manual.
Check tire pressure
Check the tire pressure when cold and adjust if necessary. It is best to check the air pressure every time you stop for fuel. The pressure values specified by the vehicle manufacturer should be observed. Attention: The pressure changes depending on the outside temperature. A pressure of 2,0 bar, measured at a temperature of +20 ° C, drops to 5 bar at a temperature of -1,74 ° C and to 20 bar at a temperature of -1,59 ° C (difference from 20%).
Note speed index
Pay attention to the maximum permitted speed of winter tires. This can be found on the sidewall of the tire. The vehicle can optionally be fitted with tires of a lower category than prescribed, which limits the speed. In this case, EU regulations require that the speed reduction must be listed on a label that is located inside the vehicle (on the windshield or dashboard so that the driver can always see it).
Check profile depth
The performance of winter tires is guaranteed up to a tread depth of 4 mm. Below this value, tires are no longer suitable for winter, but can still be used in the transition period until they have reached the minimum permissible tread depth of 1,6 mm. But be careful: from 7 °, winter tires become spongy in their driving behavior.
When not in use, the winter tires should preferably remain mounted on the rims and stored horizontally. The tire pressure before the summer break quietly increase by 0.5 bar. Turn the tire to the side without rims and stack in this way. A stack should not contain more than four tires, so that they do not deform by their weight.
