The network of charging stations is to be massively expanded over the next few years

For several years now, electric cars have also been on the rise in this country. At the beginning of 2020, there were around 137.000 electric vehicles on German roads. The stock has grown by around 53.000 cars within one year. As the number of electric cars increases, so does the need for a charging station network that this number has grown. If you ask around a little, you will quickly see that the future has long since begun.

The manufacturers are currently massively upgrading

In the past, automakers have often been massively criticized for failing to recognize the signs of the times and for failing to develop electric vehicles. However, the engineers did not leave these accusations alone. They now show what German carmakers are capable of when they are lured out of the reserve:

  • BMW plans the market launch of the BMW iX2021 at the beginning of 3 and intends to build on the success of the popular SUV X3 in the compact class and encourage customers to switch to electric cars. 
  • The visually appealing mocha from the house Opel will also be available with an electric drive in addition to the diesel and petrol variants from 2021. 
  • Volkswagen plans a massive expansion of the product range as part of its future program "Together 2025". The group plans to offer a total of 2029 different electric vehicles by 75. 

In contrast to earlier attempts, the overall package is right. The vehicles have a decent range, which in some cases is up to 600 kilometers. In addition, the vehicles have become significantly more affordable. In Germany, this is currently also due to corresponding political measures. On the one hand, this includes lowering VAT, but above all that increased funding for the purchase of electric cars. The acquisition of such vehicles is currently subsidized in this country with up to 9.000 euros. 

The mass market requires a corresponding network of charging stations

The sale of such cars can only be successful if the necessary charging station network is available. Norway is considered a pioneer in this regard. The share of electric vehicles in new registrations was a whopping 2019 percent in 42. Tesla's Model 3 is the absolute bestseller in the far north. The government is even going a step further and plans to only allow electric cars for sale in the country from 2025. 

In all of these projects, however, care must be taken not to overtake yourself. Because, on the one hand, the corresponding energy has to be produced for this and then simply made available to consumers. In Norway, the electricity required for this is generated almost exclusively with hydropower. The state itself is responsible for expanding the petrol station network by arranging for the contracts to be awarded. 

When it comes to the number of e-car charging stations per capita, Germany ranks first according to statistics from the Austrian automobile club ACÖ from 2019 with just under 40 connections per 100.000 inhabitants, only in the middle of Europe. The front runner here is the Netherlands with 252 connections, followed by Norway with 232 petrol stations for 100.000 residents. The EU average is around 34 charging stations. 

So there is a need for expansion in Germany. In any case, the plans for this already exist. Above all, discounters like Aldi and Lidl are planning a massive expansion of the charging stations in their parking lots. At Lidl, around 400 branches are to be equipped with charging stations within a year, at which customers can fill up with electricity from renewable energies while shopping. Aldi Süd has equipped around 200 of its branches with at least two charging points in the current year.

By 2030 it will be around 400.000 additional charging points are required across Germanyin order to be able to guarantee nationwide the supply of the electric vehicles in circulation. According to forecasts, around 41 percent of the electricity will be refueled via private wall boxes, and around 27 percent of the vehicles will get their electricity from company parking lots. An appropriate public network is required for the rest of the supply.

So far, many interested parties have let themselves be discouraged from buying an electric car because the charging options seem too complicated to them. While a simple drive to the petrol station and selecting the right petrol pump is enough for diesel or gasoline engines, many are not sure where they can currently charge their electric vehicles.

Is it worth having your own charging station?

If you have the space you need, you can also consider getting your own charging station for your electric vehicle and thus contribute to expanding the network yourself. Because in the long run, “snore charging” via a conventional socket is not a good idea, because the charging times are simply too long. 

The entry-level prices for charging stations for personal use are around 800 euros. On the one hand, a high price that has to be amortized first. On the other hand, a small investment if you consider that you can easily charge your own vehicle at home without worrying about where the next charging point is. If you leave the house in the morning, you always have a fully charged electric car available.
