Abarth 695: The wild Alberich

The little one sports brand Abarth drives their variations of the cult mobile Fiat 500 on top. The latest creation of the 695 makes use of the well-known addition “esseesse” and is intended to attract fans who are enthusiastic about powerful engines in small cars.

No, "eat eat“Is not the energetic appeal to the youngest to completely empty the plate at dinner. The additional name of the crackers Abarth 695 stands for two Italian spelled "S" and means "super sport". The fact that it is not in letters on the rear probably has dreary historical reasons apart from the world of faster cars.

Visually an eye-catcher

Of course there is a first thing to do Abarth 695 on the edge of the Italian test center near Milan. But a very special one. Pitch black, but with snow-white painted 17-inch rims, mirror housings and a long sticker with the company name. The aluminum bonnet is arched upwards, and beneath the gene donor's faithful double-eyed look, the wide air inlet creates a thick lip.

The most striking thing comes at the end: the spoiler on the roof edge, which can be adjusted in 13 stages. At a maximum of 60 degrees it stretches so powerfully against the airstream that, compared to other Abarth models such as the "Competitione", it pushes 42 kilos more on the rear axle. Good for waving around through quick curves and the overall sporty impression. However, it must be decided in which position the spoiler should be fixed before starting the journey. To do this, a Nimbus key must be taken out of the tool bag.

Sporty interior

Inside, the integral sports seats from the specialist Sabelt are immediately noticeable, making the Abarth "fast" even when it is stationary. The three-spoke steering wheel opens up a view of the brightly colored digital central instrument, which corresponds to the central monitor for navigation and more. The short gear stick has a carbon look as well as its ball handle. Before turning an ignition key in the classic way, everything is at least visually arranged for the hunt on the company's internal race track on the outskirts of the small town of Balocco.

For the first few meters, the sound of the 132 kW / 180 PS 1,4-liter turbo is still purring. With every gram more pressure on the right pedal, basses cheat their way onto the Abarth sheet of music. They mutate at full throttle on the straight to a lighter roar, but remain well below the roar limit. All of this is the acoustic music for the sprint to 100 km / h in 6,7 seconds, for brutal braking with the powerful help of the red painted four-piston system from Brembo and its front 30,5 cm discs. At least 24 cm at the back. At 225 km / h, the Esseesse is currently probably the fastest athlete in a Fiat 500 dress.

Also suitable for everyday use?

It goes without saying that he feels at home on a racetrack. But hardly any of the future customers, of whom there will only be 1.390 due to the limited edition, probably has a racing circuit on their doorstep. So his cracker has to prove itself in real life too. Since the Abarth is neither intended to serve as a family car nor as an excursion steamer, doing without rear doors is just as bearable as the laborious step through to the rear seats. The inevitable narrowness of the 3,66 meter alebrich makes it, like the original with the Fiat logo, the perfect city two-seater that finds a place in the narrowest parking space. The decidedly sporty design of the chassis is not really suitable for everyday use. But real fans want it hard and hard.

The look at the price tag is sobering. Almost 34.000 euros are a self-confident announcement for a car that offers more oomph than all the others in Lilliput land. When it comes to assistance systems and everything that has to do with electronics, however, he has to pull it off. But a diner like that has a different clientele, says Abarth and is probably right about that.
