Google software is moving into more and more cars. Now Ford is also stopping its own solution and relying on Android instead.
From 2023, Ford wants to use Google's Android as the operating system for the infotainment system of its vehicles. The voice control and navigation apps of the Internet group should also move into the cockpit. The current “Sync” system, originally developed jointly with Microsoft, is being phased out.
In the long term, Ford wants to advance its transformation from an automaker to a mobility service provider through the strategic partnership it has now announced with Google. Ford sees several possible outcomes of the collaboration, from new buying experiences at the brand's dealerships to advanced services for vehicle owners. Google's expertise in artificial intelligence could also help in production.
In addition to Ford, other car manufacturers are already using Android software, such as Volvo and its electrical subsidiary Polestar. Renault, Nissan, Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat and Chrysler also prefer the Google product to a solution developed in-house.
