First trips: Audi A5 and S5 - attention, here comes the new Audi train

The new A5 - driving like on rails

After more than a million test kilometers that the Audi engineers have left behind with the second generation of the A5 / S5 Coupé, the Ingolstadt-based company will be offering their designer piece - as the A5 is called in Upper Bavaria - for sale from July this year. First deliveries are expected in autumn 2016. Improving an already successful chassis was difficult, even at Audi. Its customers generated the first generation of the coupé through its design and sportiness. Accordingly, the focus was on the engine range and the chassis of the athlete. Combined, its driver assistance systems are intended to support the next step in the direction of piloted driving, and with the well-known Audi connect, the vehicle is globally networked with a permanently installed SIM card. Unlike the A3 and S3 presented a few weeks ago, Audi currently does not offer any final prices and so we only get the entry-level prices for the presentation, which will be € 5 for the A38.000 Coupé and € 5 for the S63.000 Coupé.

In order to make a sporty design even sportier, subtleties are required, the people in Ingolstadt thought. The result was a coupé with a hood that was pulled down even further, with a power dome and headlights that not only appear narrower. When viewed from the side, the vehicle underlines its coupé character with the ratio of two thirds of aluminum to one third of glass. These small changes make the car even more dominant and aggressive on the road and carry through both the Coupé and Avant body variants and the convertible that will follow in a year. The aluminum-heavy body made it possible to save up to 60 kilograms in weight compared to its predecessor thanks to the lightweight construction, which is reflected in both the consumption values ​​and the Cd value of 0,25. In order to get a first impression of its overall performance, Audi invited to the hinterland of Porto / Portugal for two days. There we were able to test its dynamics on wonderful serpentines.

Navigation via the always current GoogleMap

The typical Audi virtual cockpit shows the driver all information directly in front of him on the dashboard. We can even use the GoogleMap-based navigation system directly in front of us to navigate the A5. So that the front passenger and the other occupants can also see a piece of the infotainment, the 8,3-inch touch display in the middle of the dashboard opens up. Once seated, the information overload from the on-board computer comes towards us, but this can be divided up individually. After the first changes that we made, the work area in the A5 no longer looks overloaded. With Audi connect, the Ingolstadt-based company wants to withstand the ongoing trend towards networking and is integrating a permanently installed SIM card. Activation is possible for a period of 3 months or 3 years. After the respective term, the A5 / S5 customer can purchase a further 350-year activation using the option price of € 3. Passengers in the front seats enjoy generous legroom. Anyone who has to take a seat in the rear seats of the Coupé should better not have exceeded a body length of 1,70 m. This is due to the shape of every coupé. The trunk volume could be increased by 10 liters to 465 liters compared to the first generation.

Newly developed 3.0 liter V6 unit for the S5

The new A5 is driven by three petrol and three diesel engines. When further developing the range, the Ingolstadt engineers achieved 17 percent more output while at the same time minimizing consumption by 22 percent. As in the past, the rightsizing philosophy is trusted - supercharging replaces displacement. The TFSI 2.0 liter four-cylinder (140 kW / 190 PS and 185 kW / 252 PS) and the newly developed 3.0 V6 TFSI (160 kW / 218 PS and 210 kW / 286 PS) are combined with a 6-speed manual transmission (fully synchronized ) as well as an “s tronic” 7-speed dual clutch transmission. In addition, only the S5 is delivered with the 3.0 liter TFSI unit with an 8-speed tiptronic with DSP and sports program. For the diesel 2.0 liter TDI with its output level of 140 kW / 190 PS, Audi prefers the combination of 6-speed manual and 7-speed dual clutch transmission. For the two 2.0 liter TFSI and TDI engines, a variant with the well-known “quattro” all-wheel technology is also available. In particular, the drives with dual clutch transmission, which we were only allowed to test, have a positive effect on the first trips. Directly appealing, without switching breaks and sporty and agile, they lead us across the hinterland of Porto. The highlight of our test drives, however, is the newly tuned Audi drive select driving dynamics system (standard equipment), which allows the chassis to be switched into different modes. Regardless of the mode set, the A5 and S5 master the selected routes with the electromechanical power steering with sovereign ease. Regardless of the angle or speed at which we approach a curve, the feedback remains the same: You and the car, you have everything under control! Added to this are the engine torques. Whether at 370 Newton meters for the 2.0 TFSI, 400 Newton meters for the 2.0 TDI and even 500 Newton meters for the 3.0 V6 TFSI: the vehicle gives the feeling of putting power on the road whenever it is necessary. Unfortunately, the lowest consumption value presented to us of 4,2 liters for the A5 and the 2.0 TDI engine (140 kW / 190 PS) cannot be checked on the day of the event.

When it comes to safety, the Ingolstadt-based carmaker would like to take a further step in the direction of piloted driving and combine properties of various driver assistance systems. The adaptive cruise control system is coupled with the Stop & Go system and the traffic jam assistant in order to achieve more relaxed journeys in slow-moving traffic. Camera-based systems such as traffic sign recognition, rear cross traffic assistant, exit warning, turning assistant and evasive assistant should not be missing in the A5 and S5. A predictive efficiency assistant, which is supposed to help with anticipatory driving and fuel saving, as well as the brake assistants "Audi pre sense city, basic and rear" are also used in the Ingolstadt-based athletes.

Price list is not yet complete 

The final prices and equipment are unfortunately not yet available to us except for the entry prices. We therefore conclude that there will be no major changes compared to the previous models. We have taken the option price of the SIM card from the presentation of the A3 / S3. The basic model of the A5 is available from € 38.000 and the S5 from € 63.000.

Conclusion: driving like on rails!

The A5 / S5 with all of its body and drive variants offers total driving pleasure with maximum efficiency. Its chassis in particular makes driving a mid-range coupe a very special experience.

The combination of engines and chassis bring great driving pleasure. Simply a MUST when buying a new A5 / S5 car.
