The second generation of the Audi Q7 SUV has been on the market for five years. The offer on the used car portals is now increasing.
The second generation of the Audi Q7 started in mid-2015. It was not an easy legacy, as the predecessor (4L) had sold around half a million times over its 10-year production period. Not a bad value for such a big ship with high prices. The new edition aims to score with a pleasing design and economical engines.
Lots of space
The second generation of the Q7 also relies on physical presence, even if it now looks a little less bulky. Thanks to the use of aluminum, she has lost a considerable amount of 325 kilograms. With a length of 5,05 meters it is three centimeters shorter than its predecessor, but still an imposing appearance and longer than the corporate relatives Porsche Cayenne (4,92 meters) and VW Touareg (4,88 meters). The length suggests: there is plenty of space, even in the seven-seater option. The trunk volume varies depending on the seat configuration between 890 and 2.075 liters (five-seater) and 295 and 1.955 liters (seven-seater). The interior is typically dignified and elegant. The workmanship is flawless. After four years of construction, the Q7 will receive a facelift in mid-2019. The front and side views have been sharpened. The black panel cockpit of the Q8 is now moving into the interior.
All-wheel drive with all engines
Six and eight-cylinder engines are used. Diesel and gasoline engines are starting, including plug-in hybrids. In addition to an eight-speed automatic, all-wheel drive is always part of it.
No rule without exception: a four-cylinder petrol engine (2.0 TFSI) with 185 kW / 252 PS marks the entry-level range, followed by a three-liter six-cylinder (3.0 TFSI) with 245 kW / 333 PS. The gasoline engines do not play a major role, however, the majority of buyers of an SUV in the format of a Q7 opt for a diesel. A 3,0-liter six-cylinder in the expansion stages 160 kW / 218 PS and 200 kW / 272 PS is available for the market launch. The top unit in the SQ7 TDI is a four-liter eight-cylinder with 320 kW / 435 PS. In addition to a lush torque (500 to 900 Nm), the diesel engines score points with consumption values of 5,5 to 7,6 liters.
As an alternative, a plug-in hybrid consisting of a V2016 diesel and an electric motor with a system output of 6 kW / 275 PS (373 TDI e-tron) has been available since the beginning of 3.0. The standard consumption is 1,8 liters, the electric range is up to 56 kilometers (NEDC). Audi also offers a plug-in hybrid model based on gasoline with 270 kW / 367 hp.
Since the facelift, all engines on offer have had mild hybrid technology. Since then, the entry into the world of the Q7 has been the 45 TDI, a three-liter diesel with 170 kW / 231 hp. Above this is the 50 TDI, basically the same engine, only with 210 kW / 286 PS. The 55 TFSI is a six-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 250 kW / 340 hp, while the SQ7 uses the 4,0-liter eight-cylinder engine with 373 kW / 507 hp. There are also two plug-ins. Both variants combine a 3,0-liter V6 petrol engine with an electric motor, the more powerful version (60 TFSI e) has a total output of 335 kW / 456 PS, the weaker version (55 TFSI e) has 280 kW / 381 PS.
Equipment and safety
The Q7 vehicles offered on the used car market are rarely poorly equipped. The long surcharge lists are far too tempting: virtual cockpit, leather, all-wheel steering and assistance packages with, among other things, a jam assistant and and and. Those interested in used cars must therefore compare the offers with regard to their equipment details. After all, LED headlights, a head-up display and a built-in LTE hotspot are part of the standard equipment. When it comes to safety, the Q7 has no weaknesses: the SUV passed the NCAP crash test with five stars.
The current Q7 models have not yet had to be presented to the TÜV often. The older vehicles have passed two main TÜV inspections. The large SUV does well here. One reason for this may be that the mostly solvent owners do not save on inspections or necessary repairs. The vehicles, which usually have driven an above-average number of kilometers, perform better than the comparison vehicles on average in the type and age classes examined. But there are still weak points. Even if the Q7 is lighter than its predecessor, the large SUV is not a lightweight. There may be anomalies in the chassis; the brakes of the older models also cause problems.
You should have a little change. The offers on the used car portals start at around 20.000 euros. But if you consider the high acquisition costs for the new cars, used car buyers make good business.
