PSA has been making the mouths of Citroën or DS fans watery for months: a model offensive has been proclaimed many times, it should actually start this year. Then the disappointing response from DS Brand Director Nicolas Perrin: No later than 2018, you can see new models.
Maybe earlier. Maybe. Then just buy the refreshed DS3 again, the main innovation of which is that it is no longer an official Citroën. Instead of a double angle, the classy-looking DS logo is now emblazoned on the grille. The customer will find what they are looking for from just 15.890 euros, then there is 60 kW / 82 hp and 4,6 liters of consumption / 100 km in the averaged NEDC. The 1,2 liter three-cylinder are more stingy and more economical, if a turbocharger puts pressure on them: Then only 4,3 liters per 100 km should flow through the lines. In conjunction with the automatic gearbox alone, 4,6 liters should be on the watch again. It starts from 18.990 euros. Diesel drivers will find what they are looking for from € 20.740, while those interested in convertibles have to put at least € 19.840 on the table.
Convertible is a good keyword. The first exit leads us through a mild spring day with an open, 81 kW / 110 PS turbo. The folding roof is wide open, the roof pillars protect next to the head: At a time of year when the wind is blowing fresh, you are happy not to drive a real convertible without having to do without fresh air. So the French compact car is not a real alternative for convertible enthusiasts - the feeling of freedom is simply too little. But the chic, two-tone city car on request looks pretty, the electric hood gives it a noble touch. This fits in with the fact that DS3 customers can now drive with the right automatic converter (1.800 euros surcharge) to experience a touch of top-class comfort. The supercharged three-cylinder pushes the 1,2-tonner forward with sufficient force, and the gearshifts are smooth due to the concept. You can get over the fact that PSA does not yet offer eight courses here. Incidentally, the strength of the storm remains rather moderate even on a fast freeway lap, which of course cannot be said about the volume in the interior. Just stupid that the variable sky above 120 km / h can no longer be closed.
You can also enjoy the buzzing turbo three-cylinder even more: With 96 kW / 130 PS, the small car already outperforms some compact cars and ensures driving pleasure. With an appropriate throttle foot, the company advances emphatically, while the gear ratios of the manual six-speed transmission snap in sportily and with a pleasant precision. Unfortunately, the desire for a machine is not fulfilled with the strong PureTech. But otherwise everything is right in the Frenchman - the high-quality steering wheel with the thick rim sits comfortably in the hand. The luscious cowhide armchairs in the "watch strap finish" are beyond any doubt and have long outgrown the small car class. But you also have to pay 3.700 euros extra - that's a lot of money despite the included seat heating.
You can absolutely love the DS3, because it is simply a lovable car and not just a simple small car compared to the segment competition. It starts with the unusual design, goes through the striking 3D taillights and does not end with the chic interior, which entices Schöngeister with a corresponding cross in the options with high-gloss piano lacquer. PSA promises the customer over three million configuration options with exterior and upholstery colors. Technology fans should also take a look at the price list. In addition to things such as a Bluetooth hands-free system, digital radio and navigation system (a total of 1.690 euros), there are also safety-related extras such as the autonomous braking system. Unfortunately, the 400 euro friend is reserved for the highest equipment line in case of need. By the way, anyone who is disappointed that the now six-year-old small car cannot score with real innovations should at least enjoy its impressive workmanship. A not to be underestimated advantage of mature cars and sometimes more value than some dubious progress.
