Driving report: Genesis G70 / GV70

The Korean Hyundai-Daughter genesis two very different vehicles - and with both provides very good arguments for customers of previous offers in this segment. If it weren't for the tax office.

Actually, the roles in the big show of car models are clearly distributed - the name speaks a clear language: Sports Utility Vehicle, in short: SUV, these are the rustic-inspired companions for the rough life up to the edge of the drivable terrain. And limousines like the G70, as the French sound suggests, they should pamper us while strolling around in automobiles.

No cheap cars

In Genesis, the roles are almost wrong. This is evidenced by a trip with the new SUV called GV70 and its platform sister, the G70 sedan. The cuddly holiday friend for the whole family is the 1,63 meter high SUV (from 45.920 euros), the sedan invites you to action sports from 39.100 euros.

Driving report: Genesis G70 / GV70
The cockpit is elegantly decorated

The first round starts in the hilly Munich area with the GV70. Genesis has put a handsome eye-catcher on the wheels. With a length of 4,72 meters, there is plenty of space in all seats and for luggage. Everything, as usual for the noble subsidiary brand of the Hyundai group, is equipped with chic materials and a processing that does not have to hide from any premium competitor. Clever technical details such as displaying the reversing camera in the instruments in front of the driver when the indicator is blinking, automatically opening the tailgate when approaching, three-dimensional prominent displays or remote-controlled parking in tight spaces at the push of a button: they make life with the Genesis more comfortable.

Comfortably on the go

This also applies to driving the massive GV70. Cameras in the front scan the road and automatically adjust the dampers to the ground. Together with the ergonomically perfect seats with optional, automatically adjusting cheek adjustment, the SUV drives smoothly but still has good contact with the road. If you want to go faster, the 2,5-liter petrol engine with 224 kW / 304 PS and 422 Newton meters of torque never struggles to get the Genesis up to speed.

Tempo 100 is reached in just under six seconds, with a maximum of 240 kilometers per hour. The alternative 2,2-liter diesel is hardly inferior to these performances. However, the consumption of the gasoline engine quickly reaches double-digit values, with the diesel it remains below ten liters. However, around seven liters of diesel or just under nine liters of super are feasible on average with an appropriately relaxed exercise.

And relaxed driving is worth it. Because the SUV invites you to linger despite the sporty front with the winged Genesis brand face. Recommendation: Better to do without the optional 21-inch model (1.440 euros), which make the GV70 roll more nervously - and invest the money in a panoramic glass roof (1.810 euros). The passengers in the rear in particular will appreciate the increase in comfort.

It's not that comfortable in the limousine

In the back seats in the limousine brother G70, however, even the view of the sky should not bring any real gain in comfort to adult passengers. It is much more cramped there for taller passengers. And not infrequently also more strenuous, because the person behind the wheel will tend to drive hectically in his deeply mounted seat. The G70 wants to encourage athletic progress.

Tyrone Johnson, Head of Vehicle Development at Genesis Motor Europe, has set out to “set new standards in terms of driving pleasure and driving dynamics”. BMW three-man drivers do not have to fall into depression now - but the Genesis can certainly play in the league of such sporty sedans.

Engines

The G70 appears as a turbo gasoline engine thanks to 353 Newton meters of torque and up to 245 hp. 6,1 km / h is reached in 100 seconds, up to 240 km / h it is moving forward vigorously. The 2,2-liter diesel is hardly inferior to the Sturm und Drang. But sportiness demands more than going straight ahead at speed: the G70 lies well on the road, even when cornering quickly, the electronic steering assistance provides precise feedback - and can be adjusted even more directly in the sportiest of the three equipment lines in Sport + mode.

Then, however, the chassis is glued even more firmly to the road. It feels like every pebble hits the intervertebral disc, but the G70 also whizzes as if pulled on a belt to where the sports fan wants. Johnson keeps his promise.

However, the Genesis maker would also like to provide the same portion of convenience if required - and that's where it is. Even on properly groomed motorway stretches and in "Comfort" mode, the chassis chucks more than the dignified interior, as in the brother GV70, would suggest. The long vacation trip shouldn't be an unreservedly relaxed experience, at least for the fellow travelers.

Personal contact with the best service

The purchase itself does, however: because the moderate prices compared to the competition include a five-year guarantee, all customer services, breakdown assistance, a workshop replacement car and over-the-air software updates. A personal contact person also ensures that all services are brought home. Given these conditions and thanks to its strong performance, the SUV should find a solid position in the segment. It will be more difficult for the sedan - at the end of the year, however, a flattened station wagon variant (new German: Shooting Brake) will be added to the range.

And both Genesis have one problem: In their segment, the majority of cars are sold in commercial fleets - and arguments beyond equipment and mileage count here. As is well known, the state subsidizes electrified or fully electric vehicles and has also reduced the company car tax for e-cars from one to just 0,25 percent. As pure combustion engines, the two new Genesis vehicles will have a hard time convincing the many cost calculators.
