Driving report: Genesis G70 Shooting Brake

With the G70 Shooting Brake, which was specially developed for Europe, Genesis particularly wants to lure the station wagon customers of the German premium manufacturers. However, this could cause problems with the current range of drives.

Despite all the hype about SUVs, the classic station wagon is still high on the popularity scale with German drivers. Depending on the segment, up to 90 percent of customers opt for this variant, as is the case with the VW Passat, for example. The figures look similar in the premium middle class, where Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Volvo are at home with the A4 Avant, 3 Series Touring, C-Class T-Model and V60. For Hyundai's still young Nobel daughter, Genesis, the reason to set foot in the door right here.

Nobel Koreans for the European

This should be achieved with the G70 Shooting Brake, a sporty station wagon that was specially developed for the European market and is available from 40.300 euros. The Korean can be recognized by its horizontally divided quad headlights and taillights as well as by the shield-shaped grill. The Genesis is definitely an eye-catcher.

However, the strategists in Seoul know very well that it takes more than extravagant design to make a new brand attractive to customers in this difficult environment. The German market in particular is one of the most demanding of all. There needs to be special features, unique selling points, also called USP (Unique Selling Propositions) by marketing people.

More than just design?

But which trump cards can be found here Genesis on the G70 Shooting Brake next to the design? Is it maybe the special drive? Probably not, because neither a plug-in hybrid nor a battery-electric motor can be found in the price list. Genesis opted for a petrol and a diesel engine in the traditional way. Both units are turbo four-cylinder, there is no additional electrification (mild hybrid). The Korean engineers have also designed the drive layout in a very classic way: longitudinal engine at the front, automatic transmission, cardan shaft, rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive can be selected as an option, but not for every engine.

A real unique selling point at Genesis, on the other hand, should be taking care of the customer. "He is the clear focus for us," promises Dominique Boesch, Managing Director of Genesis Motor Europe. The special service starts with the GPA, the Genesis Personal Assistant. This personal advisor not only instructs interested parties in the world of Genesis and handles the sale, but is also available to the customer as a contact person for five years as part of a service package. "In addition to a vehicle and mobility guarantee, the package includes all scheduled maintenance work and the provision of a replacement car," says the Genesis manager. The customer does not have to go to a workshop, the car is picked up at his home and brought back there. Boesch: "We give the customer time."

Interior with soothing clarity

In contrast, when designing the interior, Genesis sticks to the familiar. The interior looks dignified and luxurious, the cockpit is a good mix of digitization, touchscreen and classic buttons and switches. There is a calculation behind this: You don't want to overwhelm the newly acquired customer when it comes to serving a new car brand that we only launched this year. And it works. Much of the G70 can be operated intuitively, and voice control also works well. The activation of some assistance systems, however, requires some getting used to. However, if you have this on your screen, the G70 Shooting Brake drives almost alone on the autobahn. All you have to do is keep your hands on the steering wheel.

Runs as it should!

There is nothing to complain about when it comes to driving, diesel and gasoline engines in conjunction with the eight-speed automatic make a great drive combination. The G70 rolls quietly and bounces comfortably, the outputs of 192 to 245 hp are more than sufficient for any traffic situation. The consumption surprised us a little. A little over 9 liters of gasoline and 7,6 liters of diesel were on the on-board computer display, even though no faster than 120 km / h was driven on the autobahn. The G70 Shooting Brake is not one of the stingy station wagons in its class.

More like the load masters. And this despite its sloping roofline at the rear, which is usually at the expense of the luggage volume. But somehow the Genesis designers managed to get a bit more load capacity out of their Shooting Brake with 465 liters (1.535 liters converted) than Mercedes managed to do with the T-model of the C-Class.
