Driving report Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque P300e PHEV

Plug-in hybrids have to be charged regularly in order to benefit from the climate. With Land Rover this is now particularly fast.

Land Rover has electrified its entry-level SUV. The compact Discovery Sport and its noble technology brother Range Rover Evoque drive 55 kilometers emission-free and silently with the new plug-in hybrid, but thanks to 227 kW / 308 PS can also accelerate to 100 km / h in less than seven seconds if necessary Prices start at 54.653 euros for the Evoque and 55.446 euros for the somewhat more spacious Discovery Sport.

Electric comes from the rear

For the first time, Land Rover has opted for a hybrid with a three-cylinder gasoline engine as the combustion engine for its smallest models. The 1,5 liter turbo is supported by an electric motor. In contrast to the German competition, it is not located in the transmission housing, but on the rear axle, which means that the two SUVs become rear-wheel drive vehicles in electric operation. An electric all-wheel drive is - unlike the PHEV technology from PSA - not possible. The power transmission in the Land Rover hybrids is carried out by an eight-speed automatic transmission, which is less weight than the nine-speed box of the conventional models.

The large all-wheel drive vehicles feel most comfortable in hybrid operation. When both engines work together, they bring powerful torque to the road with very rapid power delivery. If you don't overdo it with the accelerator, the soundscape will be very discreet to match the noble ambience of the vehicles. Suddenly strong performance demand results in a robust acoustic proof of work of the three-cylinder. If the gasoline engine has to run alone, it can be heard over and over again even at medium speed country roads despite the generally good insulation - in a heavy, leather-lined SUV it is still an unusual noise.

Almost emission-free with a relaxed driving style

The SUVs, on the other hand, are extremely quiet, accompanied only by a slightly turbine-like sound. Like the hybrid mode and an energy-saving setting, this can be selected using a button in the center console. Those who drive regularly and relaxed should be able to cover a large part of their daily routes with the Evoque and Discovery Sport without emissions. Theoretically, the 80 kW / 109 PS electric motor works up to 135 km / h on its own, but since the gasoline engine switches on automatically at medium acceleration, you need a rather steady gas foot for permanent electric locomotion.

What makes electric driving particularly attractive in the two Land Rover models is the ability to charge quickly, which is otherwise rare in this type of vehicle. Evoque and Discovery Sport can be refueled on DC chargers with up to 32 kW, which fills the battery to the usual 30 percent in around 80 minutes. Alternatively, the British hybrid cars can also charge at the AC standard charging station or the home wallbox with 7 kW. The 24 kWh battery is full again after an hour and 15 minutes. In view of the harmonious and powerful hybrid operation, quite a few customers are likely to make the effort in practice.

Discount on company car tax

In terms of performance and price, the two plug-in hybrids are at the upper end of their respective model portfolios. Because they do not make it below the EUR 40.000 net price limit, there is only the graduated environmental bonus of EUR 5.625 net. However, the discount on company car tax is likely to be much more interesting for most users. Jaguar Land Rover expects a high share of sales of the PHEV variant of 25 to 30 percent of total sales in Germany.

Two customer groups are likely to remain skeptical: long-distance drivers and trailer drivers. The latter, because the trailer load drops from two tons (Evoque: 1,8 t) to 1,6 tons. The former because the additional battery is at the expense of the tank volume: Instead of 67 liters, the plug-in hybrids only take 57 liters with them. The Discovery Sport has another point: For reasons of space, there is no third row of seats for the socket variant, the SUV with this drive is only available as a five-seater.
