Driving Report: Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S model 4matic

In the past, drivers of an AMG have rarely complained about too little power. The company around company founder Hans-Werner Aufrecht has been giving Mercedes-Benz models the sometimes extravagant, extra-portion performance since 46, and incidentally, AMG is responsible for the motorsport activities at Mercedes-Benz.

One man, one engine

Tuning stable? No, people do not like to hear that in Affalterbach. AMG is more comparable to an exclusive sanatorium for PS addicts. And to emphasize this noble manufacturing character still applies, even if AMG belongs to the Daimler Group since soon 10 years, the principle: One man, one engine. This can be seen under every bonnet you open on an AMG model: There is always a badge bearing the name of the man who made the engine by hand, placed on the engine in a prominent position. Terrific. (And yes, there are now women who manufacture these engines by hand.)

Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG 4matic S model

In the special case of “new E-Class” (yes, it is “just” a comprehensive facelift) up to now they had 525 hp on offer. The muffled, rumbling 5.5 liter V8 is now offered in two performance levels: 557 PS and 585 PS in the S-model.

Driving report E 63 AMG 4matic S-model - 585 PS in the T-model!

S-model? Model T? The older a series becomes and the more the equipment and series variants diverge, the more additional designations and identification features become necessary.

This Saturday morning I am standing in an underground car park in Barcelona, the walls are illuminated with blue light spots and as far as the eye can see, new E63 models are ready and waiting to intimidate and frighten a horde of press and blogger colleagues. The short walk from the hotel to the underground car park showed that the night had rain showers and the streets are damp. An ideal circumstance to secure the new E-Class in the 4-matic AMG variant.

Because for the first time, after the huge facelift of the E-Class, you get the AMG version of this business-class sedan with the traction advantage of four driven wheels: 4matic. In order to properly supply the front axle with power, an S model was launched and the power treatment of the bi-turbo was extended to 585 hp.

Five hundred and eighty five HP.

T-model = The business class limo with up to an “enormous” amount of trunk volume. S model = The strength treatment for the strength treatment. I sit down in the driver's seat - adjust my seating position and within seconds I feel like an integral part of this detached world of loving workmanship, fine materials and perfect ergonomics. (For example, the slight central axis shift of the steering wheel disturbs me much less than colleague Sebastian Bauer of passiondriving.de)

I confess I was nervous - before I was allowed to turn the berserker's key. Tschaka-tschaka-Vrooooommmm ...

It happened at the same moment that the first of the eight cylinders lit, and all the excitement gave way to an almost erotic excitement, an adrenaline rush, a change in the perception of worldly problems. Should the others but discuss gasoline consumption and gasoline prices, about the loss of value of luxury athletes or the question of the envy factor.

As soon as the V8 sends its signs of life through the walls of the underground garage to the driver's ear, something changes in the relationship between humans and their environment.

Automobile erotic

The first date with the dream woman or the first few hours in an automobile in this performance class. It is difficult for me to decide which choice I would make if I were faced with the choice of only one of the two in my life, just one more time.

Although - I am happily married, the decision is made.

As we leave the underground car park and drive out onto the streets of Barcelona, I first become aware of the elemental force that Affalterbach has packed under the hood of the E-Class, which is otherwise so often abused as taxis. A steep underground car park exit with wet concrete as a surface? Only brief sugars are necessary with the accelerator pedal. The traction of the 4matic and the 800 Nm of the V8 Bi-Turbo do not ensure that the E-Class drives up the ramp, but rather turn the rest of the globe in the right direction, so that every form of angles, ramps and inclines is corrected revised by the rotation of the earth.

Effective - in the past, the underground car park would have been wrapped in smelly rubber torture.

When I take the motorway out of the city and shortly afterwards reach the mountainous hinterland of Catalonia, my peripheral nervous system has hardly got used to the opulent range of services. At any time - in any star system - triggered by accelerator pedal movement, the perception of time and space changes. Zeit und Raum, Especially as a T-model extremely ambiguous and at the same time seriously full of meaningfulness.

Thanks to all-wheel drive you can now finally convert the almost indecent high engine power into real acceleration. Not just straight, even across. (Colleagues who were on the 557 PS strong E63 without 4matic on the way, there have other experiences)

Ferry across ..

More than 500 hp and the torque of a steam locomotive on the rear axle, it doesn't take much to keep a clean line on the country road. It was usually very easy to draw two lines at once. Black and 285 millimeters wide. With great commitment, we would be happy to go from curve to curve. If the handlebar with the big heart and the ambition of a gentleman driver was behind the wheel, it was necessary, however, if you didn't want the power of the force of nature pressed in aluminum bushings to be lost in blue smoke, just as much concentration as would be necessary - you wanted use a guillotine to cut your fingernails.

The best or nothing. And in Affalterbach they saw one.

However, if you divide the insane power of 800 Nm on four wheels, then the chance increases to transform as much as possible directly into propulsion.

On the winding mountain roads around Montserrat in the hilly hinterland of Barcelona, the new E63 should prove what its all-wheel drive is capable of. At over 1.000 m on this Saturday morning it was not only cool, but also damp and whoever thought the people from Affalterbach had forgotten the guillotine, has now been taught better. While the all-wheel drive E63 imitates the space shuttle at launch control start and takes off just as impressively into its very own sports sedan orbit, one should always think of the brutal power of a guillotine when sprinting from curve to curve on a fresh asphalt strip Clouds make the road wet.

Never before in my life have I driven a five-seater with 1.900 liters of cargo space and all-wheel drive, which pulls out of corners so brutally, so mean, so abnormally fast. A crazy idea of force and potency. But even an all-wheel drive cannot overcome the physics and AMG has statically distributed the power. So 33 percent are for the front axle and the rest - (in the case of the AMG, it must have been more than 67%!) For the rear axle. With ESP switched off .. (ESP Off is fOf course there was only one “handling mode” and if our Baden guillotine had shot uncontrollably through the guard rails, then the ESP would have come back on the long flight into the valley and would have definitely defused the situation)...

.. in handling mode

The dictionary of motor journalistic superlatives is missing the chapter for the “AMG E63 S-Model 4matic”, so I can only describe as a layman what happens when you let this two-ton truck fly over damp mountain roads in ESP handling mode:

Torn between risking a cardiac arrest from an adrenaline overdose and one - fearful under boutique - every feeling for the imponderables of everyday life evaporates. There braking point, there, no, over, attention, no matter, pressure, traction, departure, no, more, performance.

And finally ...

At the end of the day, only completely empty remains. Soothing. Almost sexual satisfaction after enormously stressful hours. Tired but happy. With the experience that even as a family man, you still have the opportunity to buy a car that lets the passenger fill up the buxe and on Saturday evenings when the aspirin is taken out of the closet in the bedroom - a more than fair alternative.
