Driving report: Porsche 911 Carrera GTS

The abbreviation GTS is at Porsche reserved for the sporty spearhead below the customer sport series. There are five GTS versions of the XNUMX, but despite the special equipment there is still room for improvement.

It is the three magical letters GTS that also make the hearts of Porsche aficionados beat faster. GTS stands for Gran Turismo Sport and is actually a homologation designation from motorsport. The first Porsche, the 1963 Carrera, received this addition as early as 904. Then there was a GTS break in Zuffenhausen until the 1981 Carrera GTS earned this particularly sporty name in 924. Eleven years later came the 928 GTS and since 2007 there have been GTS models at Porsche again and again, they stand for the sportiest derivatives of their series, even if the turbo models are always more powerful. From the outside, the GTS variants can be recognized by their black accentuated attachments in addition to the lettering.

Targa only with all-wheel drive

With the new 911 GTS models, five more variants of the iconic sports car are entering the showrooms of Porsche dealers. The 992 Carrera GTS is available as a coupé and a convertible, with and without all-wheel drive. The Targa is still only available with all-wheel drive. For the presentation of these new models, Porsche chose its Experience Center, which was opened at the same time. The eighth of its kind, the first in Italy, in Franciacorta, between Milan and Lake Garda.

The heart of the 60-hectare facility is, in addition to the 5.000 square meter customer center, a brand new race track with fresh asphalt, i.e. with little grip, i.e. with hardly any sticky adhesion between the tires and the road surface. To get to know the FIA-approved track better, there are racing taxi rides with the 23-year-old Porsche GT4 racing driver Laura-Marie Geissler on the wheel. The 2.519 meter long route is very demanding, not only because of the new, partly still slippery surface, but also because of the fast hairpin bends and chicanes.

But Laura-Marie Geissler has everything under control professionally and sprints from curve to curve in the fast GTS. The sport response button is then used on the long straight, after pressing the button, the engine and transmission are switched to maximum performance for 20 seconds.

The GTS engine always has 353 kW / 480 PS, the gearbox can be selected in the configurator

There is a choice of an eight-speed dual clutch transmission (PDK) or a seven-speed manual transmission, both of which are available as standard and cost no extra charge. The GTS-specific chassis with one centimeter lowering, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and the high-performance brake of the 911 Turbo do not have to be paid for separately. Anyone who opts for the ceramic brake system pays an additional 9.000 euros. For the first time, a GTS lightweight package can be ordered, which saves up to 25 kilograms thanks to lightweight full bucket seats made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic, lightweight glass on the front, door and rear windows and a lithium-ion lightweight battery. The rear seat system and floor mats are also a victim of the savings measure. There is also a carbon roof from the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur for a further 3.558 euros. Small downer: the lightweight package will only be available from November 2021.

It is also sportier inside

The GTS chassis, derived from the 911 Turbo, also had a positive effect on extensive test drives on country roads and motorways. In the event of bumps, the dampers react very quickly and you always have a safe driving experience even on the undulating roadways in Lombardy in northern Italy.

There are also sporty changes in the interior compared to the normal Carrera models. The manual gearshift lever has been shortened by one centimeter, so changing gears can be carried out even more quickly from the wrist. But, as we read in the technical data, the dual-clutch transmission is always faster than the right hand when sprinting from zero to 100 km / h. The standard Race-Tex covered sports seats Plus with electric four-way adjustment are responsible for better lateral support on the winding country roads. The sound in the interior also sounds more racing because the insulation has been significantly reduced. A bit of a chic look is allowed, with the GTS interior package the decorative seams are either carmine red or chalk-colored.

PCM, the Porsche Communication Management with enlarged touch areas in the menu, is also new. The tiles on the home screen can now be rearranged by hand and the voice assistant is now casually addressed with "Hey Porsche".
