More turbo power for Fiat 500

The TwinAir engine series combines high performance with the lowest consumption values. This also applies to the 77 kW (105 hp) latest variant, which is now available for the Fiat 500. Equipped with the two-cylinder turbo gasoline engine and six-speed manual transmission, the saloon Fiat 500 TwinAir Turbo (from 15.950 euros) and Cabriolet Fiat 500C TwinAir Turbo (from 18.450 euros) do the sprint from zero to 100 km / h in just 10,5 seconds, the top speed is 182 km / h. The average consumption of only 4,2 liters and the CO2A value of just 99 grams per kilometer also makes the revolutionary engine one of the most environmentally friendly engines in its class. It already meets the even stricter Euro 6 emissions standards.

Three equipment lines to choose from; Driving stability aid ESP as standard

Fans of the Italian cult automobile can choose between the three equipment lines 500S, Lounge and GQ. The standard equipment of all has been expanded to include the electronic driving stability program ESP. At the top are the variants Fiat 500 TwinAir Turbo GQ and Fiat 500C TwinAir Turbo GQ, developed together with the lifestyle magazine “Gentlemen's Quarterly”, which can be recognized at first glance by the exclusive two-tone paintwork: Vesuvio Black Metallic in the upper area the body, Colosseo Gray Metallic below, both separated by a gray contrasting line running all around.

The second generation of the TwinAir series is characterized, among other things, by optimized control of the intake valves. The amount of exhaust gas returned to the combustion chamber can be controlled even better this way. The exhaust manifold integrated in the cylinder head, which is partially washed by the engine cooling water, also significantly lowers the temperature of the exhaust gases. The enrichment of the gasoline-air mixture that is normally required to prevent thermal overloading of the turbocharger through internal cooling can be reduced in this way - fuel consumption is reduced.

The TwinAir engine family developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) with an investment volume of around 350 million euros represents the most modern technology for reducing fuel consumption. The exemplary high efficiency of the two-cylinder engine is achieved by three factors, which were combined for the first time in this engine. The displacement, which has been reduced to 875 cubic centimeters, is a logical example of downsizing, i.e. the use of comparatively small engines. At the same time, a turbocharger ensures the power and torque at the level of a significantly larger four-cylinder. And finally, the MultiAir system, also invented by Fiat Powertrain Technologies, enables fully variable control of the intake valves.

MultiAir replaces the conventional camshaft in conventional engines, which is used to mechanically open the valves against the pressure of a spring, on the intake side by an electro-hydraulic actuation. This enables a completely variable and cylinder-selective control of the valve opening times and the valve lift. For example, the valves can be opened long and wide or only short and little depending on the load requirements on the engine. The opening time of the valves can also be varied in relation to the movement of the piston. Even multiple opening in the course of a single work cycle is feasible. In this way, the combustion in the cylinder can be optimally controlled and the formation of pollutants is significantly reduced.

Compared to a conventional petrol engine with the same cubic capacity, the engines with MultiAir technology achieve an increase in output of up to ten percent and a maximum torque of up to 15 percent2-Emissions reduced by up to ten percent. The result is also great elasticity and a high level of responsiveness compared to conventional naturally aspirated engines. A balance shaft running counter to the crankshaft also reduces vibrations under all operating conditions, from idling to the maximum engine speed.
