FORD Ranger - Wildtrak - Driving Report

Wild landscape, wide forests, high mountains and a rough everyday life. So imagine the advertising-driving the everyday life of the Ford Ranger and yet the latest and almost unreal grown-up generation is also sold here.

While the Ranger is one of the exotics and, above all, the really big cars on the road, Ford does not even offer the Ranger in the motherland of the Pick Up Truck. In the US, the F the main role. The ranger is one “One Ford” model and is being built in South Africa. It was developed by the Ford experts from Down Under and Australia is next to India and the production country South Africa to the target market. And as it seems now, also Berlin, Dusseldorf and Cologne.

If so, then right.

You may like people who have a love for large cars, like to twist a rope out of it and consider it petty comments, but such a massive pick-up that looks mightily impressive when you stand in front of it. That also gives me a little fascination with all this metal. And even if the F-150 is a good deal bigger - the ranger can first cast a spell over its environment due to its sheer size, and in our latitudes the ranger with the double cabin is definitely one of the biggest pickups.

A car for people who can tackle. And ascend.

Over 5.30 meters long, 2.16 meters wide (including the exterior mirrors) and at 1.84 meters also impressively high. Just as high: the driver's seat. For the first time you look at the drivers of the usual class SUVs a la Mercedes ML or Volkswagen Touraeg down! Especially in the Wildtrak version, the Ranger can impress not only with its simple presence, but also with unexpectedly powerful colors and accessories. For the first test of the Ranger Wildtrak I had a 3.2 liter diesel with automatic transmission in the color “Wildtrak Orange”. The large loading area was closed with a stable-looking aluminum slat blind.

The right tool

The Ranger is much more than a “recreational vehicle”, the Ranger is a workhorse and as such one would expect a bleak interior with the colorless character of a construction site container. But far from it. The Ford Ranger offers, especially as a Wildtrak, a decidedly pleasant interior. The seats have orange stripes, the dashboard shines with a metallic-looking frame for the instruments and a multimedia system with a color display should not be missing.

The steering wheel shines not only with a chrome trim but also with comfort features such as the remote control of radio and handsfree. Really after commercial vehicle acts here in the interior nothing.

All men on board

The Wildtrak is available in two cabin versions. The “extra cabin” already offers plenty of space for up to five people. And with the “double cab”, the loading area is shortened in favor of legroom in the second row. The seats were not given the task of impressing with pseudo-sporty lateral support, but simply offer a comfortable seat. Far above all other road users.

With the 3.22 meter long wheelbase, however, even with the Wildtrak version driven by me with a double cabin and princely space in the interior, a loading area with guard dimensions remains. 1.56 meter deep, just as wide and up to the tail lift over 50 centimeters high. As you quickly become the best friend of the neighbors, if in the fall his tree trimming and green waste wants to go to the building yard.

engine technology

Ford offers three engines to choose from for the boyish pick-up. A 125 hp 2.2 liter four-cylinder diesel makes the start, followed by a 150 hp diesel, also with 2.2 liter displacement and the uncrowned king of the Ranger series, the Wildtrak - you can only get this with the strongest piece in the engine range - a 3.2 liter five-cylinder diesel with a proud 200 hp and powerful 470 Nm torque.

Yes - it sounds like a truck. And yes - it drives something similar. In conjunction with a modern 6-speed automatic transmission, you can let the diesel engine work quietly and trust the glorious 470 Nm of torque that is generated between 1.500 and 2.500 revolutions via the automatic converter.

Hit the road Jack

The Wildtrak version rolls on 18 inches big wheels. Rough tire profile in the dimension 265 / 60-18 seduces to equally rough tours which rather calls for the shortest connection between two points, as after the next motorway ramp and that was probably the biggest surprise in the test:

The ranger feels at home on the highway.

And here it was not only the perfect straight-line stability that appealed to us, but the power available to get long stages smoothly and above all not too slow behind you. Despite the rigid rear axle and the all-round considerable wheel size, the Wildtrak is very handy, almost comfortable.

Of course you can feel an enormous body roll and the steering feel can hardly be described as “direct”. He packs five men on board, has a euro pallet lifted onto the loading area by forklift truck and then easily takes everything to the next construction site. Or the trailer of a balloon driver team to the landing site, which is far away in the vegetables. The Wildtrak is one that sets itself tasks that have to be solved with strength and talent for the rough.

And river crossings up to 80 centimeters deep do not interfere. If compact SUV models dream of great freedom, then the Wildtrak is the vehicle with which these dreams can be fulfilled.
