If you ask your counterpart whether he or she has gained weight, this is rarely meant to be flattering. The new one, available since October 2016 Ka+ but this question is accompanied by an appreciative connotation. After all, the previous small car Ka has undergone quite a change. This includes a length increase of 31 centimeters, so that the Plus generation now extends to 3,93 meters and is more oriented towards the modern small car format than the previous small car class. This also applies to the engine, because the 1,2-liter gasoline engine still produces 63 kW / 85 PS, just as much as the base engine of a Golf, for example.
By the way, there is not only something new in terms of length. The Ka + has also removed the cuddly little child scheme design of the predecessor and now looks significantly more adult. He now goes straight away as the little brother of the Fiesta. There are always five doors instead of three. The rear doors allow easy and contorted entry. The space in the back seats is - at least for two people - quite decent. And since the roof line doesn't fall off fashionably, there is also sufficient headroom. Driver and front passenger feel quite comfortable, with the handlebar position being the more comfortable. The driver's seat gives more support than its lateral counterpart, overall the seating makes a decent impression for this vehicle class. Many practical shelves and good workmanship underline the positive interior experience.
There is also a trunk that really deserves its name. The technical data show between 270 and 849 liters of luggage volume, which is not a bad value for a tiny automobile who is still automotive after all. Unfortunately, the tailgate can only be laboriously opened using the key remote control. There is no separate pressure closure for manual opening. The fact that a small step is created when the rear seat backrests are folded down and the trunk carpet does not create a living room ambience must be owed to the vehicle and price category.
The Ka + is offered in conjunction with the 51 KW / 70 PS petrol engine from 9.990 euros. The new one is around 600 euros more than the previous model. At this price, the little one doesn't come up completely naked; Electric windows and electric exterior mirrors are just as much part of the basic equipment as a rear seat backrest that can be split in a 60:40 ratio, speed-dependent power steering and central locking with remote control. For radio and air conditioning, you have to invest another 950 euros. If the comfort level is a little more, you have to use the more powerful engine we drive. This variant costs from 11.400 euros, the price includes, among other things, an additional air conditioning and music system including the Ford connectivity system Sync.
Our test vehicle (of course) had a few extras such as exterior mirrors painted in the vehicle color, electrically foldable and heated mirrors, electric rear window regulators, a cruise control system and seat heating for the front seats on board, so that it costs 13.900 euros. The seat heating for 300 euros is highly recommended, especially in winter, but if you have to consider a metallic paint job for 850 euros with this vehicle pricing? The little ones are only available in white at no extra charge, but for 150 euros extra they drive up in an intense sun yellow.
Unlike many competitors, Ford uses four-cylinder engines for the Ka + and does not use turbo support. This means - in addition to the cheaper manufacturing costs - a lot of switching work for the driver. You have to keep the engine in a good mood by eagerly using the five-speed gearbox, which is a bit of a challenge given the maximum torque of 112 Nm.
The gears slide easily through the shift alleys. Although the pleasantly tightly tuned chassis could use more horsepower, 85 horsepower are fine for the tiny one. The standard sprint is achieved in 13,3 seconds, the top speed is given as 169 km / h. The speedometer even showed 175 km / h on the freeway, but its job is not the expressway in the long run. For the tempos driven there, the vacuum cleaner has to put a lot of effort, the consumption increases to 7,5 liters. Its area of application is more likely to be an urban-rural environment. On average, we achieved a consumption of 6,8 liters, just under two liters above the standard value.
Thus, the Ka + is a real alternative for drivers whose budget is sufficient for a small car, but who would like to have a better space than usual there and would rather own a new car than a used one. (Elfriede Munsch / SP-X)
