Horse Mach-E GTalopp

The electric Mustang gets a new lead stallion. With 487 hp, the Mach-E GT now also wants to make die-hard petrol heads smile.

For some it was the same Ford-Step of a liver hook from old master Mike Tyson. When the US brand announced, its icon of all things Mustang To put electricity under power, the fan scene sniffed culture desecration. How can you! We now know: Ford backed the right horse. Although the sports car turned into a crossover, the guys in Detroit knew how to make the Mustangs saddle-proof for the future. The long hood with the two species-appropriate superdomes, the typical Fastback, the exhibited fenders and finally the iconic rear lights with the three bars - all of this exudes the stable smell of the classic pony car without being embarrassing.

Is it convincing?

The criticism fell silent, the success came. In 2021 over 1.700 Mustang Mach-E were sold in Germany, the order books are well filled. And now the last petrol head is supposed to become an electric rider. From now on the Mustang Mach-E with the sports badge GT trots to the charging drinker. With a gray polycarbonate grill, additional (fake) air inlets and a black roof, the new lead stallion differs optically from its more civilian brothers.

The new Mustang ranks at the upper end of the Ford price spectrum

The technology of the GT is basically known, only more spicy. Two electric motors - one on each axle - produce 385 kW / 487 hp, and Ford specifies the system torque as 860 Newton meters. “Almost 15 percent more than the legendary Ford GT super sports car” says the press release. That's a house number. According to WLTP measurements, the 88 kWh battery lasts up to 500 kilometers on one charge, and more capacity is to be added to “overthe Air” via software update from February onwards.

Spirited rear wheel power

Compared to the previous Mach-E versions with all-wheel drive, Ford has chosen a more dynamic set-up for the GT. Depending on the driving program, the electronics distribute the power more to the rear. If the GT jerks through the curves in the “Tame” mode, pushing the front wheels through the bends, the power shifts more and more towards the rear wheels via the “Active” mode to the “Temperamental” mode. A courageous step on the “gas” and the bottom wobbles briefly, the Mustang fan likes such equestrian games.

In addition to the three standard modes, Ford loads the “Temperamental Plus” driving mode into the vehicle electrical system. And noted in the package insert: only use on the race track. Yes, yes…. “Temperamental Plus” is indeed a not entirely suitable for young people over the age of 18. With this additional joker, the GT reacts even more sensitively to the “accelerator” and reduces the activation threshold of the electronic systems.

In the limit area, the driver can now dose the power even more finely, traction and stability control are adjusted accordingly. In other words: the jockey behind the steering wheel loosens the electronic reins a little further. He can explore drifting and the limit area. Pirelli tires specially developed for the GT (245/45 R20) on standard, glossy black 20-inch aluminum wheels, the MagneRide adaptive chassis and Brembo high-performance brakes with red brake calipers underline the fact that this Mustang likes to venture out into the wild may lead over a cordoned-off racetrack.

Everything in it

We are excited and swing ourselves into the Mustang, where tight sports seats keep the driver firmly in the saddle and the large 15,5-inch touch display dominates everything. Everything can be done via this giant Ipad, which Tesla once made socially acceptable in the S model. Communication, driving modes, entertainment, navigation. This is how a multimedia system has to work. Everything is self-explanatory, almost everything is logical, the system is even capable of learning. And for the ears there is also the finest: the standard Bang & Olufsen sound system (560 watts) really lives up to its sonorous name.

This also applies (almost) unreservedly to the performance of the Mustang GT, which is supposed to put the luxury load of over 2,2 tonnes in the limelight as dynamically as it is calm. The enormous potential of the drive and the sovereignty of the power output are far from any criticism. It's unbelievable how playfully the E-Werk throws this giant mountains forward without any loss of traction. You just think, “I'll overtake him now” and he shows up in the rearview mirror. Accelerate, over, grin. 3,7 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h - any questions, dear Petrol Heads? Even the cast-iron ones get their money's worth, because the electronics can compose a synthetic sound for this acceleration orgy, which with a little imagination resembles that of a big block V8 at least a little.

Dynamic big one

If there is any room for improvement after the first test kilometers, it is in the area of ride comfort. Sure, a sporty model who drives on a cuddle course has not read its job description correctly. And the dynamic design finally allows the electric horse a gait that we considered completely utopian years ago for such a large caliber. The problem with the GT is not the performance, but the harmony of the set-up. The large wheels in connection with the short suspension travel and the high body make the GT roll wooden. On bad roads, passengers rarely come to rest even in the “tame mode”. The upper body dance to the rhythm of the longitudinal and transverse grooves. It's frustrating. There is still a lack of fine-tuning here.

The bottom line, however, is that with the Mach-E GT, Ford has bred a racehorse that does a convincing ride. The most powerful electric Mustang is still quite lonely on the course. There are currently no direct competitors. For example, a Kia EV6 GT with 585 hp will not follow until the end of next year. In terms of price, Ford dares to venture into unfamiliar territory. With a self-confident 72.900 euros, the popular brand is aimed at riders who tend not to come from their own stables. We can be curious whether this Ford step will also succeed.
