Ioniq becomes a sub-brand! The original Hyundai pony returns! What is really spectacular, however, is what the Koreans' youngest electric car offers technically and how it spoils its guests.
Ioniq 5 is the name of the first model of a new generation of electric cars, with which Hyundai will open a new chapter in its history in many ways. The stylish XL compact, which can be experienced on the road from summer, marks the start of the new sub-brand Ioniq, whose models are based on a new platform that should offer significant advantages in terms of performance, range and efficiency.
Viewed with closed eyes, the Ioniq 5 looks by no means unusual, as its silhouette is reminiscent of a hatchback compact, which not entirely by chance resembles the Koreans' first own model: the Pony introduced in the mid-70s. But despite certain retro references, the 5 is also very modern. It stands out with its large, smooth surfaces, aerodynamic fine-tuning, few beads and striking LED lights. When Hyundai designer Thomas Bürkle stands next to the Ioniq, one is surprised at the proportions of the new model, because the Stromer suddenly makes people appear small. Reason: The five-door is a proud 4,64 meters long, 1,61 meters high, sits enthroned on mighty 20-inch wheels and, at exactly 3 meters, also offers a wheelbase that is more likely to be expected in a luxury car.
The Ioniq 5 owes the generous space between the axles to the new E-GMP electric platform from Hyundai Motor Group, which also includes the Genesis and Kia brands. It is flat in the middle and can be equipped with electric motors on both axes. This results in a high variability in terms of force distribution and performance. There will be four performance levels in the case of the Ioniq 5: The weakest version is powered by a 125 kW / 170 PS and 350 Newton meter rear engine from 0 to 100 km / h in 8,5 seconds. The basic version is combined with a 58 kWh battery, which is presumably designed for a range of around 400 kilometers. The larger battery with 500 kWh should allow around 72,6 kilometers. Hyundai combines this with a 160 kW / 218 hp rear engine that shortens the sprint to 7,4 seconds. Alternatively, there are both battery sizes with an additional front motor and system outputs of 173 kW / 235 PS or 225 kW / 306 PS and 605 Newton meters of torque each. The all-wheel drive systems allow sprints in 6,1 or 5,2 seconds. All four drive variants dispense with a gear shift, the top speed is limited accordingly to 185 km / h.
The Ioniq 5 is quick to charge the battery. E-GMP also stands for 800-volt battery technology that can accommodate a charging capacity of up to 220 kWh, which, with the appropriate charging station technology, allows the battery to be filled from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes. Electricity for 100 kilometers can be recharged in less than 5 minutes. Of course, charging with household electricity with 230 volts and an 11 kW wallbox is still possible, but then takes a lot longer.
It would take a long time to charge the Ioniq 5 with the optional solar roof. Strictly speaking, it is a glass roof that integrates small solar panels that can collectively generate over 200 watts of power. The 12-volt on-board network and traction battery can be refueled with solar energy, but you will not really be able to use the Koreans independently of the electricity network. The main purpose of the PV system is to generate a little more range on the go. During tests in Spain, Hyundai engineers calculated that the solar cells can feed the batteries with traction power for around 2.000 kilometers per year.
The Ioniq 5 is a family car. Thanks to its long wheelbase, guests will be happy to have plenty of room to develop both front and rear. The rear bench, which can be folded down 60:40 and moved lengthways, offers three seats. Alternatively, the 540 liter trunk can be expanded to 1.600 liters. Under the front hood there is also a small additional storage space with space for 54 liters for the RWD and 27 liters for the AWD versions. Basically, the Ioniq 5 is suitable for the attachment of a trailer coupling, which is expected to allow 1,6 tons of trailer load.
The tidy and at the same time comfortably designed interior is characterized, among other things, by the use of recycled materials. The dashboard is impressive with two large 12,25-inch displays, which, unlike in the industry, are framed in white instead of black. Multimedia and connectivity are of course very important in the Ioniq 5. The user can also use the app to access the vehicle remotely with his smartphone and, for example, check the battery level or preheat the interior. There is also an augmented reality head-up display that projects information into the driver's field of vision in such a way that it acts as a clue on the road. It also offers a wide range of passive and active safety systems. In the Euro NCAP test, those responsible expect a 5-star result.
The prices for the Ioniq 5 have not yet been determined. Hyundai wants to start with a well-equipped early-order version. These first versions will probably be issued to customers early in summer. The Ioniq 2022 sports sedan has been announced for 6, with the large Ioniq 2024 SUV to follow in 7.
