That vehicles for more than five passengers do not always have to be a bus or a high-roof combination, knows Hyundai already longer. The Koreans have with the Grand Santa Fe since 2013 a vehicle with seven seats in the program.
The successor to the unsuccessful ix55 not only has six to seven seats, depending on the seating, it is packed with equipment right up to the roof and offers an impressive amount of space. Compared to his little brother Santa Fe, he not only carries the suffix "Grand". He offers nearly 23 centimeters more car and the additional two seats that camouflage themselves in the trunk floor. It is also an eye-catcher visually: with a stately length of almost five meters and a height of 1,70 meters, it makes every small car driver pale. Nevertheless, the designers have managed to create an elegantly dynamic form for him. Contributing to this, for example, the mighty radiator grille and the upward sloping side lines.
The wheelbase of the length of a Smart Fortwo (2,80 meter) gives an idea of how much space the interior offers. The Grand Santa Fe is both in the front row and in the rear significantly more spacious than its few competitors. Above all, the driver and front passenger can almost loll on the well-padded seats. The different materials on the dashboard are quite high quality, the instruments are easy to read. However, not every first step leads to what you are looking for: For example, at the petrol station you first have to look for the lever for the fuel filler flap, which is rather atypically hidden in the side paneling of the door. There is also room for improvement when it comes to seat heating, as it takes a relatively long time to come up to temperature. On cold winter days, the buttocks are freezing for a very long time on the leather seats. Since the steering wheel heating is much faster.
The greatest strengths of the Grand Santa Fe are its variability and its capacity. In addition to their own offspring, friends still fit into the car, all of whom still have their bags stashed. Once the offspring is delivered, the third row of seats can be easily folded in and the resulting trunk volume of 634 liters makes space for weekend shopping and several crates of soda. If the second row is also folded up, the newly purchased closet also fits on the long loading area.
When motorized, the thick Koreans makes it easy for its buyers: The only drive is a 2,2-liter four-cylinder diesel with 145 kW / 197 PS in combination with the six-speed automatic and four-wheel drive offered. Keyless the family breeder is started. Its smooth running and low noise fit. The chassis is comfortably designed and taut enough to keep the body stable even in fast corners.
He feels most at not too fast travel on the highway. If the speed exceeds 160 km / h, he can not deny a certain effort. At 200 km / h, propulsive forces and driving resistance balance each other. When starting off, you should not be surprised, despite his almost 200 PS, that he needs his time. After all, the all-wheeler 2,2 must set in motion.
You can tell that at the gas station. On average our 8,9 liters of diesel flowed through the lines, on fast stages it was also more than eleven. Hyundai gives as an average 7,6 liter, which is rather a lot in the competitive environment of premium providers. This should also have their share of the six-speed automatic, which switches gently and quickly, but felt some of the almost 200 drive horse inhibits. More gears and an overall greater spread of the translation would probably not only reduce consumption theoretically. When steering we would have liked a more direct response.
The "premium" equipment we drive includes a thick bundle of extras that other manufacturers pay dearly. These include xenon headlights, on-board computer, lane departure warning system, electrically adjustable and folding exterior mirrors, leather seats, an electric tailgate, automatic air conditioning and manual air conditioning for the third row of seats. Of once Korean equities no trace, that also applies to the price list. It starts at 46.500 Euro. For the almost fully-fledged friend of the family 50.700 Euro are due.
Overall, the Hyundai Grand Santa Fe has succeeded formally. However, what he lacks in comparison to competitors like BMW X5 or Range Rover Sport is the right image and a bit of technical fine-tuning. He is, despite his lush price at first glance, surprisingly cheap compared to the premium providers and also comes with a five-year warranty.
