A small car comes out big: Only half a year after the start Hyundai the i20 is now accompanied by a coupé. The three-door will go on sale in May and will cost at least 16.350 euros. This makes it - as it should be for a coupé - 500 euros more expensive than the corresponding five-door, which Hyundai justifies with better equipment. The lane departure warning system, for example, and the heated steering wheel are always standard on the i20 Coupé.
When Hyundai boss Markus Schrick talks about this newcomer, he likes to talk about design and emotions and that he wants to appeal to younger target groups with the coupé. Therefore, unlike their German competitors at Corsa & Co, the Koreans have not just left out the rear doors, but have digged deeper into the sheet metal. They made the roof a little flatter, emphasized the rear wheel arches more and tilted the rear window, crowned by a neat spoiler. In addition, the car has got a more striking radiator grille and slightly more conspicuous fog lights, and on top of that, it shines with LED daytime running lights as standard.
On the other hand, little changes in the space conditions. Of course you have to move a bit until you have climbed through the larger doors past the easy-entry seats on the back seat. But once you sit down, head and knee freedom are bearable even for two adults. And the trunk volume is even a touch larger at least at full seating with its 336 liters than the five-door.
Even with the technology Hyundai leaves no doubt about the positioning of the coupe. The basic engines are therefore not even offered. Instead, there are only the strongest diesels and gasoline from the i20. For the oil tanker faction, this is an 1,4 liter with 90 PS, which manages 175 km / h and is on the list with 4,1 liters. The Otto fans also serve the Koreans with a 1,4-liter, which comes on 100 PS and is quite neat in the feed with its 134 Nm: Who turns off the engine pretty and only late to the crisp six-speed gear meshes, so on the highway at least more fun than a sprint from 11,6 seconds would suggest. And in such a small car, the 184 km / h at full throttle also feel much faster.
In addition, the end of the flagpole is finally not reached. Later in the year, Hyundai wants to refill again and therefore brings in the i20 Coupé a nine turbo. Although he has only three cylinders and a liter of displacement, but should come to 120 PS - and then easily crack the 200er brand. After all, coupes traditionally do not just want to be beautiful but also fast cars.
