Jaguar F-Pace 25d AWD - The Empire sized down

To be during the Volkswagen group Diesel problem flying over and over again and announcing to Volvo that in the future it will completely dispense with diesel, the British are taking a different approach. In the Jaguar F-Pace 25d, the British luxury brand is showing an 2.0 liter diesel with 240 PS, which should close the gap between the 180 PS Diesel and the 3.0 V6 diesel with 300 PS. We have moved the SUV and clarify the question of whether it must necessarily be a six-cylinder diesel for the handsome British.

The first shock is digested: A Jaguar SUV, can that be okay? It can - and how! The British have landed a big hit with the Jaguar F-Pace. So great even that the SUV was voted "World Car of the Year 2017" in the field of design. No wonder, the British manage to put a real eye-catcher on its four wheels, pick up the dynamic lines of the brand and not clumsy. Other British manufacturers did not manage this with their first SUV self-interpretation: The Bentley Bentayga - albeit positioned much higher - acts pompous and "over the top".

Design - F-Type for families

The Jaguar F-Pace, on the other hand, looks as if you have the sports car Jaguar F-Type taken, retained its merits and linked with the target ideas of an SUV. Although the Brit makes a handsome impression, but avoids skillfully, to work overweight. So he confidently wears the big, barred brand grill with a big cat emblem and puts it in scene with eye-catching air intakes. But the eyes catch the narrow headlights, which act like concentrated narrowed eyes - much like a big cat on foray. Its filigree LED daytime running light signature underscores this impression.

Dynamic lines and taillights in the style of the sporty Jaguar F-Type.

The side view looks like a tense muscle: individual games are striking and are gently played around by the sheet metal dress. The small Greenhouse creates the look of massiveness, as the body looks more present. The 20 inch rims could be larger, however: they are almost lost in the large wheel arches - despite the not exactly small format. From an optical point of view, the 22 inch rims would be optimal - what the comfort says, is another matter. The sideline is further loosened by fine but very pretty details, such as the badge on the front wheel arch.

At the stern look away? Not on the Jaguar F-Pace. The SUV carries a sweeping roof spoiler, which stretches the roofline and makes the rear end even more dynamic. There are also taillights in the style of the F-Type with a fine LED light signature. You are responsible for the aggressive expression of the stern. The two, set a little too far towards the center of the vehicle end pipes, however, seem a little undersized for the not exactly small Jaguar F-Pace.

Jaguar F-Pace interior: Modern clubroom

On the other hand, the interior of the F-Pace is not undersized. There is space for four travelers. In contrast, the passengers in the first row of seats should not be huge, since the leg room behind them can quickly become scarce, the front seats are moved back far. Otherwise, you feel very well housed in the British: It looks almost as if the SUV wanted to wall its occupants. The raised body creates an ambience that radiates a great sense of security. In addition, the "window sills" are nicely wide and invite the elbows to linger. Anyway: The design is also in the interior a great strength of the British. Only the electrically extending rotary selector for the automatic transmission - a visual highlight. The practical benefit is not necessarily given, since the extension and retraction takes a few seconds. But the effect is all the more charming.

The brown leather is the interior of the best. British style at it's best!

The new infotainment system of the Jaguar F-Pace is also attractive: Pro Package 2 includes a 10,2 inch touchscreen and 12,3 inch TFT instruments. Not only functions such as traffic jam information are exciting, but that the InControl Infotainment screen functions as a split screen. Depending on which side of the vehicle you are sitting on, you can see a different picture with a corresponding function. So while the driver looks at the navigation map or controls his favorite music, the front passenger can watch a film full-screen and follow the sound through headphones. The driver doesn't notice anything.

However, one gets plenty of luggage with: 650 liter standard volume even outperform most of the upper middle class. Thus, there is enough space for all sorts of lifestyle accessories. Maximum up to 1.740 liters. And so you do not have to get your fingers dirty - after all an SUV wants to romp in rough terrain and wallow in the mud ("clears the throat") - the tailgate automatically opens and closes again.

Driving impressions - Four cylinders for a cheer?

Of course you don't shoo an F-Pace over stick and stone - the pretty Brit is much too good for that. Although on the other hand it is equipped with all-wheel drive. Nevertheless, the SUV is designed more for the road and throws the 4 × 4 drive into the weighing pan as a safety gain. The Jaguar F-Pace 25d AWD does not have any traction problems.

The 25d is dynamic enough for the Jaguar F-Pace.

Does the new four-cylinder with 240 PS about too little steam? It depends on! The performance data is expected in and of itself a six-cylinder diesel. 240 PS and 500 Nm are already a force - at least on paper. And also the performance speaks for itself: From zero to 100 it goes in 7,2 seconds, the end is at 217 km / h - for a SUV of this caliber quite good. Especially since the 8 automatic step makes a very good job. She always has the right gear, shifts buttery and imperceptible, but also does not take long to respond to spontaneous orders - a good package.

Nevertheless: one Six-cylinder diesel the new 25d does not replace. It simply lacks the displacement that creates the feeling of never-ending vehemence. No, the F-Pace 25d is not slow - it actually lacks nothing. But if you are used to the pressure of a V6 diesel, you will miss it. The new four-cylinder diesel - by the way, the 25d is an in-house development of Jaguar - even a turbo lag. Nevertheless, he lacks the casual performance of the larger unit.

Compensates for the consumption: Combined, the 1,8-Tonner should only approve 5,8 liter. The 3.0 liter of diesel, however, requires only 0,2 more liters, but offers the richer performance. In addition, his extra weight of around 70 kg hardly changes the agility of the British: The chassis gives itself kommod, resiliently deflects faults, but allows little lateral tilt. Added to this is the steering, which makes the vehicle size forget, but could turn out a little less smooth.

Conclusion - sometimes more is more

The better is the Good Enemy. The Jaguar F-Pace is a sovereign SUV of the upper middle class with the 25d AWD. He delights with his looks, convinces with his new infotainment and enjoys with his economical, agile drive. Still, you just realize that it could have been something more. About more power, about more displacement, a little more pressure. So if you have to look at the budget, especially when it comes to maintenance, you should simply hide the big diesel and be happy with the 25d.
