News: SRT - It doesn't always have to be downsizing

In terms of price-performance ratio, the 83.900 Euro mega SUV Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT is even inexpensive

The first contact is fierce, the resulting impression remains: With 624 Nm torque, the chief pushes all Grand Cherokees as if he wanted to send the asphalt beneath him into the eternal hunting grounds. The Grand Cherokee SRT (the abbreviation stands for Chrysler's house tuner "Street and Racing Technology") presses the pilot into perfectly shaped, ventilated sports seats. This additionally sweetened the act of the kickdown called "Pedal to the metal" in the USA. With the linear force of the 344 kW / 468 hp 6,4 liter V8 naturally aspirated engine, Jeep's sporty flagship is powerful and impulsive, but not brutal or unpredictable. Violence of the gentle kind, accompanied by a powerful sonorous V8 sound. Amazing, but true: In terms of price-performance ratio, the 83.900-euro mega-SUV is even inexpensive: a somewhat weaker Porsche Cayenne 3.6 GTS with 440 hp costs a good 98.000 euros. A slightly stronger Range Rover Sport 5.0 V8 SC with a smooth 500 HP, at least a good 90.000 euros.

A concert-sounding 6,4 surround sound system from Harman Kardon competes with the overwhelming sound of the 7.3-liter HEMI power plant: V8 combustion noise against 825 watt music, two arm-thick black exhaust pipes against 19 "GreenEdge" high-performance speakers including subwoofer and active noise suppression , In general, Jeep took full advantage of the interior of the SRT: carbon decor, aluminum pedals, a beveled sports leather steering wheel and a visually pleasing mix of nappa leather and velor enhance the interior of the 4,85 m long jeep to match the engine power ,

The SRT tamer also has a lot to offer technically. A permanent all-wheel drive system ensures intelligent power distribution to all four wheels in order to bring the overwhelming power to asphalt or loose ground in a controlled manner. This works without criticism even with heavy use of torque. The steering, on the other hand, would have to feel more precise in order to keep up with the overall package. And the adaptive damper control "Selec Trac" is already hard in "Auto" mode, then hard in "Sport" mode. At least one advantage: for an all-terrain vehicle, the Grand Cherokee SRT wobbles surprisingly light-footed through alternating curves.

What we also noticed: For such a dynamic large SUV with appropriate side forces, the Grand Cherokee should offer the driver's right leg more grip. And the aluminum pedals for brake and gas are very close together, which you get used to. In contrast, material quality and workmanship in the SRT seem almost perfect. The eight-speed automatic works flawlessly and very rarely arouses the need to use shift paddles on the steering wheel to determine the levels yourself. In addition to mostly very good service, the SRT tamer enjoys good all-round visibility. Like him, his passengers enjoy good space. The trunk volume of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is ample with 782 liters, the maximum possible of 1.554 liters just as passable as the 520 kg payload.

But 2,4 tons of live weight want to be moved with a lot of effort. You don't notice that in the Grand Cherokee SRT when it comes to the drive, because the 6,4 liter V8 catapults it in 5,0 s from a standing start to 100 km / h. However, it is very noticeable when it comes to fuel consumption: officially, 14 l / 100 km apply according to ECE standard. It is possible to increase the value to well above 20 liters. In a realistic mix, depending on the temperament of the driver, you will end up with 16 to 18 liters. Even cylinder deactivation cannot change this. The SRT is not only as strong as a herd of bison, it also drinks like that.
