Mercedes-Benz S-Class - What does maximum well-being smell like?

It is in the nature of things that a top model from a premium brand has a very special task to fulfill. Anyone who says “Mercedes-Benz” means a mixture of comfort, value, quality and safety. Anyone who says “Mercedes-Benz S-Class” means the pure form of these four factors – the essence of the upper class automobile, the pinnacle of automobile construction. The market entry of a new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is always a special event for the automotive world and has been the rallying cry since “the Daimler”: “The best or nothing” has issued – every step and every model is viewed with particular suspicion. And the generational change of the S-Class is no exception - on the contrary.

The first exposed photos of the new S-Class are buzzing around on the web, but the Stuttgart-based company is still covered with information about when and where the new luxury model from the Swabians will be presented to the public.

In November of last year I was able to get an impression of the new Assistance systems in the upcoming S-Class W222 procure. Some of these systems are already with the facelift of the E-Class arrived in the business car league below the luxury liner “S”, but I suspect they haven’t revealed all their cards in Stuttgart yet – and are therefore eagerly awaiting the premiere of the new Swabian flagship.

Until then, the Mercedes men will be presenting a few selected features of the new S-Class in front of a limited number of journalists.

A breath of fresh air

Wikipedia knows to report that humans can distinguish up to 10.000 smells and for us this means much more than the possibility of finding the best mulled wine stand at the annual Christmas market. Humans associate dozens of unconscious events with smells and without thinking about them we are influenced by memories of pleasant smelling or less pleasant smelling events. The smell of a doctor's office or the sweet perfume of your first friend - we associate smells with a lot of emotions.

What Mercedes-Benz is presenting for the new S-Class goes beyond the simple idea of a scent tree. Even simply putting up a perfume bottle was not enough for the inventors in Stuttgart. An emotional moment, thanks to selected, personal, fragrances should be created and preferably over a long period of time.

In order to awaken this special form of emotional memories and create a climate of “feel good”, a place has been created in the glove compartment of the new S-Class where the owner can place a special fragrance bottle. From here, the scenting system (optional!) will use the scent supply at intervals.

At the start there will be four fragrances. But also empty bottles, so that the customer can use his own fragrances as well. The Mercedes fragrance dispensers should each be sufficient for 12 months.

The names of the four first fragrances with the Daimler star are: Nightlife Mood, Sports Mood, Downtown Mood and Freeside Moode. I would like to describe specifically how these smells affect me, but I don't run a perfume blog, there are others for that: http://www.alzd.de/ - But I can tell you this much: The current range of Daimler fragrances ranges from a fruity, Indian breeze that transports the breath of an enchanted forest clearing to a world of citrus fruits, metal and new car leather with an almost sterile-looking technical note. the.

A quiet moment

The quieter a car looks in everyday life, the more elegant it also looks. A vehicle that protects its occupants from annoying noises is just as relaxing. For Mercedes-Benz it was therefore the goal to reduce the sources and causes of inherent noise in the new luxury S-Class to a minimum during the design phase. Getting a car quiet by plugging it up with insulation isn't difficult. But it causes massive excess weight of the vehicle. Another possibility is the use of anti-noise systems based on hi-fi high-tech and loudspeakers. However, Mercedes-Benz did not want to work against the noise, but rather aimed in designing consciously to eliminate sources of noise from the start. In times of the CO² discussion and constant consumption optimization, this way makes more sense instead of reducing noise sources or filling them with high-tech.

In the case of the S-Class, the focus was therefore on two conceptual points:

Vibrations and aerodynamics.

In elaborate computer simulations, possible sources of interference have been discovered and solutions have been found. Especially in the area of aerodynamics, they want to have made great strides. Because where the wind doesn't have to linger for long, there are no noises at all. The new S-Class should shine with a splendid drag coefficient - unfortunately no fixed number has yet been given.

An exciting time

While on the one hand the disturbing sound sources, mechanical and wind noises have been minimized, on the other hand even more sound has been provided. A ballroom on four wheels - this is what the new S-Class is supposed to be, for customers who equip their new S-Class with the optional Burmester sound system.

24 loudspeakers - 1.540 watts of power - 3 processors for optimal sound and a front bass system that, like in the new SL, uses parts of the body structure for optimized sound development.

The demonstration of this sound system was stunning. A merciless example of how a concert hall can be imitated from disdainful sound waves. In addition, a kick bass that - if you are not prepared for it - can trigger an acute risk of heart attack. At least if the buyers of the S-Class are still as old as I currently expect.

emotions

The S-Class has probably already been a kind of third home for many owners, with the new version the Stuttgart-based company wants to make this home even more emotional, even more valuable, even more loving.

The details that I have been able to experience so far give me the feeling - this goal could be achieved.

Whether the new S-Class will therefore become the “best car in the world” again, well – we will have to wait until the veil is finally lifted in Stuttgart. But the first scent mark has been set!
