After the duty follows at Mercedes always the freestyle. When the new editions of bread-and-butter models such as the C-Class and E-Class are established in the market, the elegant variants will follow. Now, for example, the new E-Class Coupé, which does what the name promises: The two-door vehicle will in future be based on the E-Class and not, as before, largely on C-Class technology.
The Coupé is also visually recognizable as an E-Class derivative and fits in a convincing way between the two-door versions of the C-Class and S-Class. The E-Class Coupé appeals with its unexcited and elegant design with large, smooth surfaces, but which also exudes a certain basic dynamic. For the first time, Mercedes is offering taillights that breathe some dynamism into locking and unlocking with special lighting sequences.
Thanks to the larger platform, the Schönling has grown significantly in all directions. In length alone, the model has grown by 12 centimeters to 4,83 meters. This increase has a positive impact on the interior space. Even in the rear, adult guests should be able to travel with ease in the future. At the front, the coupé also offers its guests a lot of E-Class luxury, such as the optional giant display cockpit or ambient lighting with 64 colors. Other option highlights include a remote park pilot and the drive pilot. While the Park-Pilot allows remote-controlled parking of the vehicle, the Drive-Pilot relieves the driver with partially automated driving skills.
The standard engines, which are all combined with a nine-speed automatic transmission, already deliver what the dynamic appearance of the E-Class Coupé promises. The basic version E 200 performs 135 KW / 184 PS and does the 7,8 km / h sprint in 100 seconds. In addition, it is 240 km / h fast. The standard consumption is a smooth six liters. The provisional top version E 400 4Matic consumes a good two liters more, which thanks to a three-liter V245 petrol engine with 333 kW / 6 PS only takes a little over five seconds for the sprint and achieves electronically limited 250 km / h. Alternatively, there is also the two-liter four-cylinder of the E 300 with 180 kW / 245 PS and a two-liter four-cylinder diesel with 143 kW / 194 PS. This 220d should only consume four liters per 100 kilometer. An AMG version will later round off the engine range, but Mercedes has not yet given any details.
The E-Class Coupé will start in spring 2017. The Stuttgart-based company does not name any prices yet, but the basic version should start at just under 50.000 euros. (Mario Hommen / SP-X)
