About “humming” and “humming”. Or: How a single corporation plays the full range of automotive tones.
This Geneva Motor Show is a blessing. Relatively manageable in size, it still offers all the important innovations of the automotive year. For car fans who just want to get an overview of the trends and models of the future, it would even be enough to visit just one manufacturer in Geneva: Mercedes-Benz.
Oh god - I hear her moan. This car blogger had been invited by Mercedes-Benz on this visit to Geneva. And now, now he is singing the high praise. They bought that blogger. Bloggers are all bought. No auto journalists. Anyway, they just grumble dully at what the press departments prompt in their ears. Yes. Yes. And yet completely wrong. Because the press conference from Mercedes-Benz and the Stuttgart booth are indeed presenting exactly the enormous range of topics and models that we will be dealing with over the next few years.
Now you should briefly part with the thought of the “bought blogger” and immerse yourself for at least a second in the premieres of the Stuttgart. Then you also understand why I rate the Mercedes-Benz appearance as extremely successful.
From the rumbling rumble of the GT3 to the quiet whirring of the plug-in hybrids
The V8 of the new AMG GT3 fills the exhibition hall with a warm engine sound. The press conference turns into a pit stop. Racing professional Bernd Schneider steers the roaring AMG GT3 onto the stage in Palexpo. The PK smells of the racetrack. Three or four gas bursts let the grumbling idle sound of the 6.2 liter V8 vacuum grow into a rumble of thunder. From the passenger side Dr. Z and opened the PK.
Minutes later, silence. The plug-in hybrid V-Class, still known as a “concept”, hums softly onto the stage. With two such contrasting vehicles, Mercedes-Benz demonstrated the enormous range of the Group's capabilities within minutes. You can then briefly think about the Google and Apple mobile phones. Quiet. Secretly. Be careful not to miss the appearance of the new S600 Pullmann. Well, until the 6.5 meter long limousine has rolled onto the stage, it takes a little longer anyway.
No, if you see this range: from the furiously drumming V8 in the purebred GT racer to the locally emission-free passenger van, then you should too the last columnist from Berlin understand: Cars are not built just like that. Many people may have ideas, but how to bend iron, design chassis that are safe even at 250 km / h and how to emotionally offer people 5-meter sheet metal, that cannot be compared to the development of a smartphone.
The new GT3 racer from Affalterbach shows off its powerful sound and powerful performance values. However, it is not the new Bi-Turbo V8 of the production GT that is under the hood, but the technically mature naturally aspirated engine of the AMG SLS GT3. The AMG GT1.300 would undercut the minimum weight of the GT class of 3 kilograms. This is ensured by carbon and lightweight construction on all corners. And even if the body looks rough, masculine and moody again than in the AMG GT series, the new GT3 should at least give the drivers and teams a wide grin on their faces in the 2015 season.
Mercedes-Benz eV-ision Concept
Of course, Mercedes-Benz can be reproached for having left other manufacturers with the pioneering role in plug-in hybrid technology. But now to show the new V-Class as a plug-in hybrid - sure, still called a concept - is relatively innovative again. A business transporter like the V-Class in particular should find many friends as a plug-in hybrid.
But families who indulge in their hobby with the V-Class at the weekend will also enjoy the silent weekend tour. Mercedes speaks of a 13.5 kWh battery pack and a total system output of 333 hp. The neatly large - larger than in the S-Class S500 plug-in hybrid! - The dimensioned battery pack should enable an e-range of up to 50 kilometers. In the NEDC standard cycle, the V-Class “e” has 71 grams of CO2 per kilometer and a consumption of less than 3 liters per 100 kilometers.
Mercedes-Maybach S600 Pullmann
The other end of the scale is the 6.5-meter Pullmann variant of the Mercedes-Maybach S600 Neither sporty like an AMG GT3 nor sensible like a V-Class with plug-in, just decadent and overwhelming in size.
Of course with a cutting disc to the chauffeur. Of course, with a seating system in which up to four passengers in the luxury world sit across the road from one another. Of course, later also available in an armored variant. An automobile whose target audience is somewhere between African dictators, Russian oligarchs, Hollywood red carpet and the President of the United States.
With a 4.50 meter wheelbase, looking for a parking space in the city center and even visiting the next parking garage is rather pointless. However, the 530 hp of the V12 Bi-Turbo will probably only hum whispering quietly due to the flash of lightning from Paparazzis. A Burmester sound system and an electrically extending TV screen are available for the exclusive passengers, anyway.
Mercedes-Benz C350e - plug-in hybrid
The next novelty in Geneva? After the extra portion of sport, the extra portion of luxury and the extra portion of reason, a reference to everyday life. With the plug-in hybrid version of the C-Class, Mercedes-Benz is launching a car that makes sense in sensible everyday operation.
340 Nm and 82 hp, that's how much power the C350e's electric motor offers. This means that speeds of up to 130 km / h can be driven purely electrically and the battery capacity of 6.2 kWh should enable a range of just over 30 kilometers. The well-known 2.0 liter turbo gasoline engine with 211 hp joins the E-Power. In contrast to the other premieres, the price is also important with this new presentation. As an attractive estate, at least € 52.630 is due. The sedan is just under € 51.000.
The C350e manages the standard cycle NEDC with 2.1 liters per 100 kilometers.

Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 Coupé
I'm still having a hard time with that. But the GLE Coupé apparently fulfills the wishes of car buyers. Less in Wanne-Eickel and not in the Swabian Alb, but in the Near and Far East and of course in North America. Long story short. If you consider the GLE Coupé simply as a portfolio expansion, then it simply makes the entire range of the Stuttgart-based company even more extensive. Whether he likes "us" is not the point here.
Okay, careful readers noticed. Something was missing from Mercedes-Benz's presence in Geneva: something small, something for “everyone”.
