Kia completes his ceed quartet. After five-door, station wagon, estate coupe (Shooting Break) is now the XCeed. He relies on the new genre of "crossover". A mixture between a normal hatchback sedan with sporty coupe ambitions and a classic, higher-built SUV.

Kia follows with its new XCeed the current trend, the always quite chunky SUV behind bevelled and send them so with a coupe appearance on the road. No reason to worry for the SUV disciples among the Kia customers: The Koreans donated to the newcomer so coveted higher ground clearance with raised seating position, but as a kind of mediocrity between sedan and Stadtindianer.

A very successful operation of the designers, whose result has now been released from all cases in the Frankfurt Kia headquarters. Of course, the "X" is a direct relative of the well-known Ceed, who has made a name for himself in the Golf class for just over a year. The new is 4,2 centimeters higher than the sedan and all around provided with all sorts of attributes, which should have such a car from the point of view of many SUV owners. In the case of the XCeed, for example, these are a dark plastic planking around the wheel arches, an equally decorated door sill and, as icing on the cake, another element in the form of an underrun protection at the rear. All the extra all-around makes the XCeed a few inches longer. A touch of optic off-road vehicle feeling so, even if this Kia probably will not move off the beaten track, not least because of the lack of four-wheel drive.

The second part of the design breeding starts in the area of ​​the third roof pillar. From here on it goes downhill with the roofline. The rear window is not steep as an SUV, but quite oblique. So the brave Ceed becomes a kind of coupé sedan with a cuddly rump and just the statement of the sublime thanks to the high-lashed suspension, which lets it float with 18,4 centimeters of ground clearance over the asphalt.

To recognize the "X" from afar, the designers changed the otherwise typical Ceed facial expression with a larger lower air intake. It harmonizes with the slightly narrower, also changed grill, which interprets the "tiger nose" of the other models more discreetly. New also the headlights. "Only the two front doors were taken over unchanged from the basic model," emphasizes Europe CEO Emilio Herrera, meaning the visible components of the X-Ceed. For under the sheet, of course, the new has brought along a lot of family genetic material.

This also applies to the interior design, where experienced Ceed drivers immediately feel at home. One detail, however, is new: The XCeed may be the first Kia model ever to decorate with a fully digital instrument cluster. It features a 12,3 inch large, high-resolution monitor with crisp graphics. The driver can bring to his own taste essential details in the field of vision. Depending on the chosen equipment, the new "Mice Cinema" is even standard on board.

The passenger compartment confirms its suitability for everyday use in this class at the first seat fitting. Leg and knee freedom of the backbencher deserve as much praise as the capacity of the room. The feel-good factor is then again the height compared to the sedan into play. The newcomers to all places are happy about the 4,2 centimeters, which they have to drop less deeply into the seat. Certainly, "real" SUVs offer even clearer "high seats", but the XCeed is precisely in the middle of the possible.

The most tempting option is the more powerful variant with the 1,6-liter turbo gasoline engine, which is the tip of the Ceed iceberg with 150 kW / 204 PS. Rather sensible customers will probably fall on the model offered in the 140 PS range. Then there is still money left to make use of the large supply of electronic helpers. Here Kia offers almost all assistants that are currently available. Networking with the digital world has also been expanded for the XCeed, which is one of the first models to use Kia's own online service "UVO Connect". It can also be linked to the smartphone.

Next year, the Ceed will then arrive in the electric age. Then a so-called "mild hybrid" appears, whose e-motor supports the gasoline engine, but can drive it only a few hundred meters purely electrically. If you want to drive good 50 kilometers, then you can switch to the plug-in hybrid, which is also planned for the beginning of 2020.
