It's Monday morning and I'm preparing a blog post about the most important events of the weekend. Until I stumble upon the news that “Dan Wheldon” died last night after an accident on the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Dan Wheldon is not particularly well known to the average motorsport fan in Germany - but he was one of the great figures in the Indy Car Series. In 2003 he was voted “Rookie of the year” and in 2004 he won his first indy car race in Motegi.

Dan Wheldon turned 33 and is survived by his wife Susie and son Oliver. My condolences.

Edit:

When it became clear that Dan Wheldon had not survived the accident, the IndyCar officials decided not to restart the abandoned race. Instead, the drivers made 5 commemorative laps in honor of Dan Wheldon.

I personally had goose bumps ...
