Check the oil level regularly in winter

Guide: Increased lubricant consumption

In winter, many cars consume more engine oil. Motorists should keep this in mind.

Especially in winter motorists should regularly check the oil level in the engine. Because at low temperatures, the lubricant consumption can increase, especially on short distances. The reason is the prolonged cold weather phase due to the winter cold. If engine oil is missing, it should not be dumped into a hot engine when it is freezing, warns TÜV Rheinland. This can cause damage due to thermal stress. Instead of storing in a frosty garage, the oil is better stored in the warmer cellar.

The oil level is checked when the engine is cold. If you've been driving for a short while, wait five minutes for the fluid to flow back into the oil sump. When refilling should not be exaggerated: Too much oil is just as bad as too little.
