Future drive concepts at PSA - it no longer works without electricity

Nobody knows exactly what the future holds. But one thing is certain: The demands on the automotive industry will continue to increase. Especially with regard to environmental laws and emission guidelines: 2020 is to apply in Europe a 95-gram CO2 limit, five years later, the maximum emissions are to be reduced again by 20 grams per kilometer. Now has PSA - the French car maker with the brands Citroën, Peugeot and DS - presented his plans for the next few years with which he wants to achieve these goals.

Of course, PSA, who are planning new models via 30 in the coming years, can not announce any big surprises. The French also want and need to rely on electric drives and hybrids in the future. And they are sure: the electric car has to become a full-fledged car for pioneers, who also put up with one or the other disadvantage, in terms of space, safety and comfort, as well as with regard to loading times and ranges.

To implement this, PSA has developed a completely new platform strategy. Instead of six, only two platforms will be used in the future. One of them is the already used EMP2, on which among other things Peugeot 308 and Citroën C4 roll off the line. It will also serve as a carrier of the mid-range models in the future, but from 2019 should also drive up with a plug-in gasoline hybrid drive. By installing an electric motor on the rear axle, PSA now also offers four-wheel drive. Thanks to its higher performance, it should work much better than the previous diesel hybrid models of the group. In addition, an electric motor will also be on the front axle in future, both of which will each produce 59 kW / 80 horsepower.

Depending on the battery pack - PSA operates on two variants with 12 or 13 kWh - a purely electric range of 60 kilometers is feasible. The batteries are charged after four and a half hours or two and a half hours at a fast-charging station. In addition, there will also be a battery charging mode for PSA, which recharges the batteries while driving. At the end of a long journey, for example, you still have enough energy to stream to your destination in the city center. That this charge mode is not very efficient, since the gasoline engine has to work much more, is an open question.

The gasoline engine itself contributes 110 kW / 150 PS to 147 kW / 200 PS, so in total there are around 300 PS available. If desired, they should not only ensure economical progress, but also driving pleasure. The power is managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission, which is installed for the first time across the combustion engine and electric motor. The first gasoline plug-in hybrid from 2019 on is available in a DS model, with 2021 expected to have a total of seven models across the Group.

The second platform will be developed together with PSA's Chinese partner DFM (Dongfeng) and will be called CMP. It will carry the smaller models up to the compact SUV, and it is - in addition to diesel and gasoline engines - responsible for the electric drives. 2019 will launch the first electric car on this platform, two years later it will be four models. The drive will take over an 85 kW / 115 PS strong electric motor, the 300 kilogram-heavy batteries with 50 kWh capacity will be installed in the future, where now usually tank and exhaust system sit - so under the car. There they take away neither space for passengers nor for luggage; a plus that the plug-in hybrids can also claim for themselves.

The range of electric cars, which are to roll off the same volume as the models with conventional internal combustion engines, PSA currently estimated at up to 450 kilometers, the charging time is eight hours. On request, however, it can also be done more quickly: A new fast-charging system should make it possible to pump enough energy for 12 kilometers into the batteries in one minute. In addition, a new heat pump, which also works at minus 30 degrees, should ensure a longer range in winter. It takes on the heating function and uses less energy than conventional heating. The unneeded power is therefore available for driving. All that remains is the question of the price for the brave new drive world - PSA cannot answer that today, however.
