Toyota Yaris - a small car makes a career

The Toyota Yaris was voted “Car of the Year 2021” in Europe this month. The first model generation was also “Car of the Year” 21 years ago and also won the “Engine of the Year” award with its 1,0 liter engine.

The Yaris was introduced in Europe in 1999. It was the brand's first model to be designed at Toyota's European design center in France. From 2001 the small car was also produced there in the newly opened plant in Valenciennes. The “short and high” concept ensured that the 3,61-meter-short Yaris had a slightly raised seating position with a good all-round view, but did not diminish its sporting talents: in the “Toyota Yaris Cup” it offered talented young drivers a platform and also sat on the road dynamic accents, such as the Yaris TS launched in 2001 with 106 hp (78 kW). Practicality was the motto of the Yaris Verso minivan, which had almost 2000 liters of storage space with its rear seats that could be lowered into the floor.

The first Toyota Yaris (P1) found around 1,2 million buyers in Europe and was replaced at the end of 2005 by the next generation (XP9), which was the first B-segment car to achieve five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test. As a novelty in the class, the Yaris offered a driver's knee airbag at the time. With the successor model (XP13), hybrid technology then moved into the small car class in 2012. But the sporting talents were also retained. In 2018 Toyota won the manufacturers 'championship in the World Rally Championship with the Yaris WRC, followed by the drivers' title in 2019 and 2020. In 2018, the World Rally Car also inspired the development of the edition model Yaris GRMN with 400, which was limited to 212 in Europe and sold out immediately. His legacy will take place in Europe's Car of the Year 2021, the GR Yaris - with an additional 49 hp.

Over four million Yaris have now left the plant in France. With the Cross, another variant of the successful small car will be added there shortly.
