Nio with a range of over 1000 km

From next year, Nio also wants to sell its e-cars in Germany. With the new ET5, the Chinese offer an interesting alternative to Tesla's Model 3.

The electric car manufacturer Nio has unveiled the new ET5 performance sedan in its home country of China. The four-door, around 4,80 meters long, will compete against Tesla's Model 3, among others. Thanks to the large battery, a range of over 1.000 kilometers should be possible.

The numbers speak for themselves

Visually, the ET5 is based on the design language of the larger ET7. Slit-like front lights and an aerodynamic outer skin are striking. The drag coefficient is correspondingly low at 0,24. The twin-engine all-wheel drive provides 360 kW / 489 PS and 700 Newton meters of torque, which enables a sprint from standstill to 100 km / h in 4,3 seconds. There are three battery packs with 75, 100 or 150 kWh. According to the official China measurement cycle, a range of 550, 700+ or 1000+ kilometers should be possible. Nio will offer the so-called BaaS option (Battery as a Service) for the ET5. Here the customer rents the traction battery instead of buying it. At the same time, BaaS customers can use a battery change system in which empty batteries can be exchanged for full batteries in just a few minutes.

For the ET5 there should be a battery with 150 kWh, which should allow a range of over 1.000 kilometers

Quality can be sustainable

The driver's seat of the ET5 is characterized by a huge 12,8-inch touchscreen in the center console and a smaller display behind the steering wheel. The interactive and networked knowledge database Nomi is also located on the dashboard in the form of a display sphere. The interior should be characterized by high-quality and at the same time sustainable materials. Nio promises innovative ambient lighting, a surround sound system and a huge panoramic glass roof. With special VR glasses, occupants can use the interior as a cinema during breaks in loading.

At around 4,80 meters, the ET5 is slightly shorter than the Model 3 from Tesla

Thanks to strong computing power and 33 sensor units, which include cameras, LiDAR, radars, ultrasonic sensors and V2X communication technology, the sedan should master automated driving skills at autonomy level 3. From September 2022, the Nio ET5 will be available in China without a battery at prices starting at around 36.000 euros. Prices and information about the market launch in Europe are not yet available. Nio plans to bring the technically closely related ET7 onto the market in Germany in March 2022.
