Nissan Navara - advanced lifestyle

Pick-ups are the robust cousins of the SUV. Actually conceived as honest field workers, they are marketed in Western Europe in the slipstream of the crossover boom, primarily as a beefy lifestyle mobile. Who cars like that Nissan Navara wants to use as an impressive car for everyday life, but must know what he is getting into.

The Nissan Navara wants to be more than a platform truck for business people

First of all, the all-clear: nobody in the Navara needs to be afraid of parking. Thanks to all-round camera surveillance at the front, rear and in the exterior mirrors, maneuvering the massive body is child's play. The video eyes are actually primarily intended for off-road use in confusing terrain, but not only protect against unintentional contact with boulders or rock faces, but also against touching bollards or parking lot neighbors. However, prerequisite for careful parking is that you find a suitable gap at all.

Even deep water is not a problem

The chances of a parking space depend on the local conditions and good planning. Anyone who drives into a narrow city center in Saturday's shopping traffic has lost. With a good 5,30 meters in length and a width of well over two meters, the Navara will find a place under the open sky only with luck. In addition: Many parking garages become a mouse trap - you can find it in, but it is difficult to get out. It's good to have a second car with city-compatible dimensions for such occasions. Outside of the weekend operation and with a little knowledge of parking garages (newer models are usually built more generously than those from the 70s), the Navara makes surprisingly little trouble. However, you have to make concessions when taking your luggage with you. The loading area is huge - and thanks to various tarpaulins and hardtops (from 3.400 euros) the range of accessories is also weatherproof - but also quite high and low. The platform is only really practical if bulky or dirty items are to be transported - such as a small off-road ATV or bark mulch from the hardware store.

Load fits neatly on the platform

Concessions also require driving behavior. Where current SUVs drive like particularly large cars, the Navara behaves like a particularly large commercial vehicle. Grumpy and loud, with tough steering and rough heavy-duty chassis. The shirt-sleeved 2,3-liter diesel with 120kW / 163 PS pushes the all-wheel drive vigorously, but ensures that every passenger notices it. The relaxed and powerful swinging high above the rest of the road traffic can be fun, you feel almost like a captain of the country road. However, the romance evaporates quickly on long journeys in a loud cabin. The Navara is one of the top in the segment in terms of driving comfort. On the rigid rear axle, models with double cab coil springs provide improved wheel guidance, which means that the stern follows the bow more precisely through the curve. The Navara hardly knows rumbling of the rear axle.

Inside, it's classy

Even in the interior, there is little reminiscent of a commercial vehicle, much more like the Qashqai and X-Trail SUV models. The cockpit interior also comes from the latter, and can be finished with leather and chrome on request. The equipment list with items such as an emergency brake assistant and air conditioning for the rear is generally more extensive than in the pick-up class. Even if the Navara moves away from its favorable base price with all the fine extras (from 26.470 Euro for the basic model with two-plus-two-seater king cab and rear-wheel drive), it remains relatively inexpensive for a car of its size. As a four-wheel drive with the smaller of the two diesels and with the chic N-Connection equipment (two-zone automatic climate control, tinted windows, 18 inch wheels), the five-seater double-cab model 35.670 Euro includes VAT. Even a comparable Nissan X-Trail would be more expensive.
In the end, none of this can hide the fact that the Navara is ultimately not made for the boring everyday life between the new development area and the motorway. The robust ladder frame, the switchable all-wheel drive including off-road reduction and differential lock on the rear axle and the standard hill driving assistant show that he actually wants to go off-road. There, the Navara easily hangs all the fashionable soft roaders on paper: 22 degrees ramp angle, 50 degrees tilt angle and 60 centimeters wading depth - to name just a few key figures that SUV drivers generally don't even have in the technical data sheets of their models would find listed. And even beyond difficult terrain, the Navara scores with a solid one: up to 3.500 kilograms are allowed on the hook, around a ton of load on the 1,58 meter-long platform.

The cameras ensure clarity

You can only be really happy with the Navara if you understand lifestyle as an active lifestyle. With chunky sports equipment, or in open terrain. If you only want a car that is as thick as possible in order to be able to give the robust types, you are better served with a classic SUV. (Holger Holzer / SP-X)
