Nissan Note - 360 ° Safety with the Safety Shield

Advertorial ad

Along with the new one Nissan Note the Japanese automobile manufacturer has also brought a special safety feature into the class of compact and mini vans:

Nissan Safety Shield

At my Test drive with the new Nissan Note I was able to test the “Safety Shield” myself and was surprised at how well this system works.

What can the Nissan Safety Shield do?

The carmaker combines three assistance systems under the term Nissan Safety Shield. And here it is striking that these assistance systems were previously only available in significantly higher-priced vehicle classes. With the Safety Shield, Nissan therefore wants to bring the safety features from the luxury class into the segment of mini-vans and compact family cars.

In the case of the Safety Shield, there are three assistance systems:

  • Blind spot assistant
  • Lane Keeping Assistant
  • Moving Object Detection

We know the assistant for the blind spot from the upper class. The system was first introduced there and helps drivers change lanes. Especially on the highway, the assistant monitors that no vehicle is driving in the blind spot of your own mirror. Of course, a “Blind Spot Warning Assist” doesn’t eliminate the need to look over your shoulder, but it is a good addition and helps avoid the risk of changing lanes even though a vehicle is driving directly behind you.

Lane Keeping Assist is also known from the luxury class. In the note, a passive system was implemented that does not actively countersteer, but activates the driver's attention. This system is designed to prevent you from leaving your lane if distracted. With a beep and a message on the display, the assistant secures the driver's attention and the driver can react.

I find “Moving Object Detection” extremely useful. This system warns of movements around the Nissan Note. The best example of the warning function is the supermarket parking lot. While you are pulling out of a parking space, keep looking to the front, back and side so as not to damage another vehicle when pulling out of a parking space. It can quickly happen that someone walks past with a shopping cart and thinks you'll see them. But you look straight ahead so as not to get stuck when pulling out of a parking space. The Nissan Safety Shield detects movement in the immediate area and warns the driver, so there is still time to brake in time.

How does the Nissan Safety Shield work?

An integral part of the entire system is a wide-angle camera at the rear of the Nissan Note and the 5.8-inch display of the Nissan navigation system. The wide-angle camera at the rear provides the necessary information and the Safety Shield computer recognizes the dangerous situations and, in the case of “Moving Object Detection”, shows them directly on the display.

The problem with rear-facing cameras has always been: In rainy weather, they get dirty quickly. Nissan came up with something special:

It is the first system with an integrated washer and dryer nozzle. The camera is cleaned with a water jet and blown dry with compressed air. So the camera remains in use despite its exposed location - pretty clever.

The new Nissan Note does a lot so that its occupants always feel safe. The Safety Shield is part of the complex package to protect the occupants.
