Test: Nissan Navara 2016

Feel like a load

Nissan Navara - pragmatist and workhorse in staff union

Test of the Nissan Navara with 163 PS diesel engine

They may not be too handy, but when it comes to pragmatism on wheels, they are unbeatable. Pick-up trucks. Best seller in the USA, but more niche models here. But, there is a fan base and vehicles like Nissan's Navara have served this segment very successfully for many years! Commercial vehicles with an open flatbed and a load of around one ton are considered too big, too unwieldy, too uncomfortable and too thirsty. The new Nissan NP 2016 Navara, available since January 300, aims to dispel these prejudices. He also wants to score points with security and a new entertainment system. However, the loading capacity and its off-road qualities must not suffer. The pick-up offered in the versions King-Cab (2 + 2-seater) and Double-Cab (five-seater) costs at least 25.095 euros. We tested the Double-Cab, which is actually a huge station wagon with an open loading area!

At first glance, the Navara looks like what you would expect from a pick-up: large and imposing. It is of little use that the vehicle now appears less chunky and angular than its predecessor. No wonder, the version double cabin - by far the most popular in Germany - stretches to proud 5,33 meter length. For this purpose, the Navara measures good 1,80 meters in height and in width - including the exterior mirrors - almost 2,10 meters.

The advantages of the dimensions can be seen on the one hand in the interior, on the other hand on the back of the platform. The cabin offers plenty of space for the passengers. The interior is now also based on specifications as known from the Qashqai or X-Trail. So there is no commercial vehicle blues, at least in the higher equipment lines. This includes automatic climate control, leather, leather steering wheel, navigation system, alloy wheels, LED headlights and an electric sunroof as standard. Nissan has also upgraded when it comes to safety. Uphill and downhill assist are standard with the 4 × 4 variants, an autonomous emergency brake assistant is optionally available. Our test Navara had the halogen lights on the front, which could make little happy. This may be accepted for a farm animal, but as a lifestyle vice it is not okay. Better go for the high-quality TEKNA equipment here!

Despite the generous cabin, there is still enough space for cargo on the platform. The bunk measures 1,58 meters in length on the Double-Cab (an increase of 6,7 centimeters). For easier handling, Nissan offers numerous accessories such as retractable cargo bed and rails. Up to 1.062 kilograms may be loaded, the trailer load is up to 3,5 tons. This is enough to move a small family's household or just to tick off any form of hobby.

A 2,3-liter four-cylinder diesel with 163 hp or 190 hp tinkers under the hood so that it can still move forward under the load of a good load of gravel in the rear. Our test car came with the 163 hp diesel and since we couldn't even use the full payload, the engine was more than sufficient at all times. A manual six-speed gearbox is available so that the power can be passed on in a sensible manner. There is also an automatic, but this is reserved for the 190 hp engine.

Even the 163 hp engine works more than convincingly. The high seating position, the rolling comfort, the high torque of the diesel - the pick-up suddenly becomes the ideal travel carriage! That there is a loading area in the back? You can see it in the mirror. But the Navara feels like a cruiser for the long haul. Even the suspension remains far removed from the bony hardness of a classic commercial vehicle when unloaded! You hardly notice that you are traveling in a 5,33 meter ship. Another innovation for the Navara is especially appreciated on bad and bumpy roads. Independent wheel suspension is used on the rear axle of the double cab. Instead of the amalgam fillings of the teeth being shaken to their foundations when driving over potholes, as is the case with models with a rigid rear axle, one sways comparatively gently over all bumps. This not only pleases the dentist, the intervertebral disc also remains relaxed.

A practical aid for easier maneuvering in confusing terrain is the environment observation system up to Tempo 10, which shows the vehicle from a bird's eye view and a 360 degree view. So you can see in the display, what is in front, behind and also next to the vehicle or whether the narrowness of the curve with the turning circle (12,4 meter) could fit.
