Number of cars in Germany

The fact that things are tight on German roads is not just a feeling.

In the past 60 years, the number of cars in Germany has increased more than tenfold. According to the evaluations by the data service provider Statista of figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority in 1960, there were around 4,5 million registered vehicles, at the beginning of this year there were almost 48 million. The motorisation level in Germany is currently 574 cars per 1.000 inhabitants on average.

Until 2007, the number of registrations will rise continuously to around 46,6 million vehicles. The decline in 2008 to 41,2 million cars is due to a change in counting. Vehicles that were temporarily deregistered were also counted up to 2007, but from 2008 they were no longer included in the statistics.
