Used car check: Opel Grandland X

The Opel Grandland X is a compact SUV with Franco-German genes. He cuts a fine figure. The TÜV inspectors also see it that way, at least almost.

The Grandland X is from the joint development between Opel and the French PSA group developed. When the planning started, Opel had not yet been bought by the French, and the merger into the Stellantis group was still in the stars. The SUV came onto the market at the end of 2017, and the first models have now had TÜV approval.

Body and interior

With a length of 4,48 meters, the Opel Grandland X belongs to the compact class and is the bigger brother of the Crossland X, which also had PSA genes in 2017. The compact shares the platform with the second generation of the Peugeot 3008, the differences are more evident in the design than in the technology.

At first glance, the Grandland X can be identified as a member of the Opel family. The bonnet features three arrowed lines, with a sharp edge running laterally from the driver's door to the rear lights, as if across the structured rear end. Its long wheelbase (2,68 meters) allows good space in the rear. The trunk volume of 514 to 1.652 liters is suitable for everyday use. However, those who use the plug-in hybrids that have been available since 2019 have to make compromises. Here the luggage part only holds 390 to 1.528 liters.

The interior design is tidy and functional. The choice of materials and workmanship are class-typically good. The Opel can score points with the seats, provided the first buyer has invested in the multi-adjustable and back-friendly AGR ergonomic seats on the driver and passenger side.

At the end of 2021, the Grandland X received a facelift. It can be recognized by the "Vizor" grille, changed lights and a new cockpit.

Motors and drive

French is the only language spoken under the hood. The base petrol engine is the well-known 1,2-liter three-cylinder with 96 kW/130 hp. The turbo is sufficient for solid driving performance, at the top up to 190 km/h are possible. Average consumption values are between 5 and 5,5 liters. A manual six-speed gearbox ex works provides the power transmission to the front axle, alternatively a six-speed automatic was available until 2018.

Since 2018 there are two more courses. Also since this year, Opel has had a 1,6-liter four-cylinder with 133 kW/188 hp in its range, which consumes an average of 5,8 liters. The turbo unit, which is always coupled to an eight-speed automatic, drives up to 220 km/h. The plug-in hybrids (PHEV), which have been available since 2019 and can drive up to 40 kilometers purely electrically, are a little faster. The PHEV, which also only drives the front axle and has a system output of 165 kW/224 hp, reaches a top speed of 225 km/h; the top model with a system output of 221 kW/300 hp reaches 235 km/h. Thanks to a second electric unit on the rear axle, there is also all-wheel drive.

The 2018-liter four-cylinder diesel available until 1,6 has 88 kW/120 hp and a top speed of almost 190 km/h. It consumes an average of 4 to 4,3 liters. In addition, a 2020-liter diesel engine with 2,0 kW/130 hp was available until the end of 177. Here, the power is always transmitted via an eight-speed automatic. The 2018-liter diesel with 1,5 hp has been available since 130. On average, 4 liters flow through the lines. The 1.5 comes with a six-speed manual gearbox ex works, with an optional eight-speed automatic.

Equipment and safety

The names of the equipment lines end with Selection, Edition, Innovation and Ultimate. Among other things, the basic model comes with air conditioning, radio, electric windows and exterior mirrors as well as some assistance systems such as traffic sign recognition, cruise control, hill start assist and lane departure warning. If you want to be more comfort-oriented, vehicles from the Innovation and Ultimate lines should definitely be on the short list. The top-of-the-range variant includes leather interiors and heated seats for the front and rear, heated steering wheel and an infotainment system with an eight-inch color touchscreen including navigation. There is also a parking assistant and a 360-degree camera. Perhaps the first buyer also ticked the glass panorama roof? The compact Opel completed the NCAP crash test in 2017 with a five-star result.

Quality

During their first TÜV visits, the Grandland X vehicles showed no weaknesses in almost all test points. However, only almost: The TÜV inspectors criticized the brake discs a little more than usual and the headlights also give cause for criticism. There are no problems with the checks of the environment (exhaust system and oil loss) and chassis.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a used compact SUV, the Opel Grandland X is not a bad choice. The design doesn't polarize and the space is decent. You should want to invest at least 14.000 euros, used PHEVs start at around 30.000 euros.
