Brand outlook Peugeot

Electrification at Peugeot is picking up speed. Stromers and plug-in hybrids are even becoming the top performers in their respective series. A mini Stromer is missing, however.

Peugeot announced it over two years ago. "Our most powerful models do not necessarily have to be fired by a conventional combustion engine and thus have a correspondingly high level of CO2 emissions," said the company headquarters in Paris. There is another way: fun and savings. The result will go on sale in the form of the 2021 PSE at the beginning of 508. The abbreviation stands for “Peugeot Sport Engineered”. A plug-in hybrid with a system output of 360 hp sits under the hood. The 508 PSE is the most powerful series-production Peugeot in the history of the French brand. At the same time, the model is certified with a consumption of 2,0 l / 100 km.

No big surprises

It doesn't stop with one model. The PSE abbreviation will most likely also carry the next generation of the 308 on the rear, but not before 2022. The performance should be on the same level. First of all, home-style cooking is served. In autumn 2021, Peugeot will be presenting the new 308 with diesel and gasoline engines and as a plug-in hybrid. The "French Golf" comes up again in two body styles, a five-door hatchback and a station wagon. Peugeot's head of design, Gilles Vidal, should have drawn the 308 as attractively as the 208. The brand will definitely keep the i-cockpit, in which the instruments are located above the steering wheel rim.

Originally, it was once considered to base the 308 on the EMP2 platform. However, this would not allow a battery-electric drive, at least one with competitive battery capacities. After all, you will encounter such strong competition as the ID.3 from Volkswagen. But from the development of Peugeot we can hear that the CMP architecture “still has some room for improvement” and that the compact model will therefore also be available as a fully electric variant.

It stays electronic

Peugeot completed the electrification of its LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) range by next year. Expert and Boxer are already electric, the e-partner complements the portfolio and uses the e-kit, as it is also under the 208/2008 or Opel Corsa, means: 100 kW / 136 PS electric motor and 50 kWh battery. The same technology will also power the e-Rifter, the partner's high-roof combi version.

With a new e-mobility development in the PSA Group, Peugeot wants to expand the Stromer range from 2023. The architecture is called eVMP (Electric Vehicle Modular Platform) and is intended for vehicles in the C and D segments. Declared goal: higher performance and larger battery capacities. For the latter, PSA speaks of "50 kWh per meter between the axles". This enables energy contents of up to 130 kWh and ranges of up to 650 kilometers. The first model on eVMP is likely to be the next 5008. The top model in Peugeot's SUV portfolio will also be available as a plug-in hybrid for the first time. In the current generation, this was not possible because of the 7-seat configuration.

The little one has to go

However, what is possible in the future, the French want to present at the end of 2021: the study of a 5008 with hydrogen technology. The fuel cell drive could then celebrate its series launch in the successor 2024 around 5008.

The smallest Peugeot, the 108th, will probably end its production shortly before the turn of the year 2021/22. A successor is currently not on the plan, not even in cooperation with the sister brands Opel, Citroen and DS. Peugeot will then no longer have a small city car and will follow the trend of other car manufacturers, for whom the A0 segment will no longer leave a margin due to increasingly strict emissions regulations. And whether Peugeot really goes the way like Citroen and sends a 45 km / h city vehicle like the Ami on the road remains doubtful. Experts see a better chance in association with FCA. Fiat has just developed an electric platform for the new 500. A mini Stromer from Peugeot could also be built on it.
