The new Peugeot 208 - first test drive

Small all-rounder from France - The new Peugeot 208 is now also electric

According to the logic that one plus one should be number four in the automotive industry, 208 plus X could amount to 500. For Fiat, the question of the successor or replacement of the Cinquecento is existential and therefore also a strong momentum to ally with PSA. The new Peugeot 208 is a small car platform that genetically brings its versatility and usability to different brands and model concepts. So if everything goes as it is already roughly defined between PSA and FCA, the new Peugeot 208 could also make a career as the upcoming Fiat 500.

Peugeot now hooks the 208 to power

That he has what it takes, showed the pride and quantity supplier of the French at the driving show in and around Lisbon. In its second generation, it now stands out with a length of 4,06 meters (an increase of 9 centimeters over its predecessor) clearly out of the mass of other small cars on the market. In addition, Peugeot is now also in this segment completely up to date and offers the only available as a five-door 208 also in a purely electric variant. Unlike other manufacturers, the French do not afford their own platform, but build on the new modular CMP variants with internal combustion engines and electrically powered equally.

The little lion shows offensive

Visually unmistakable, the new 208 drives out of the two headlights its three bright claws. The vertically protruding daytime running lights in the saber tooth look and the powerful radiator grille further emphasize the aggressive exterior. So that no doubt arise on its origin, adorn the exceptional front and the brave rear - as after years of desired anonymity meanwhile in many other manufacturers - the logo of Peugeot. With the exception of the basic version, the French give all 208 rear spoiler on the way. In the variants GT and GT line fender flares in the black piano paint make the 17 Zöller larger and the kids even more sporty.

In the trunk less space than the predecessor

The space inside is still neat for the driver and front passenger, the rear passengers cannot complain about insufficient knee room, but for tall people it is a bit tight over the head. A tribute to the new lines of the 208, which is three centimeters lower than its predecessor. Despite the increase in length, the trunk volume has decreased significantly, instead of 285 liters, when fully occupied, only 265 liters are now available for luggage. But you don't necessarily have to go on vacation for three weeks in a small car.

The new digital cockpit looks futuristic

The furniture looks more valuable than in the predecessor, the hands glide over pleasant materials such as black piano lacquer, foamed high-quality plastic and pleasing carbon look. In front of the driver, the futuristic-looking digital cockpit dominates over the small steering wheel typical of Peugeot. Above the basic version of the 208, information such as speed or navigation information is brought to the foreground and directly into the driver's field of vision via a new - in this class rather unusual - three-dimensional display. This should help to shorten response times.

Fix charging the smartphone with the USB-C standard

Touchscreens with either a five, seven or ten inch diagonal screen are used for the intuitive operation of navigation, infotainment and air conditioning. Of course, MirrorScreen also the content of your own smartphone can be mirrored. An uninterrupted power supply while driving is provided by two USB charging ports in the front and two in the back - more than many SUVs have. Impatient people can use the new standard USB-C access in front for extra fast charging. On request, an inductive charging station in the center console on board.

Three gasoline, one diesel and one electric variant

Under the bonnet are five different engines to choose from: three gasoline with a turbo three-cylinder, the 70, 100 or 130 PS makes, a four-cylinder diesel with 1,5 liter displacement and 100 PS and the all-electric variant with a 100 kilowatt electric motor with 136 PS and a 50 kilowatt battery that will bring the e-208 according to WLTP readings up to 340 kilometers. For the middle petrol engine with a maximum torque of 205 Nm, which is available on request with the gently and early switching eight-speed automatic, Peugeot promises the largest sales share. It drives the little lion effortlessly from 9,9 to 0 km / h in 100 seconds with more than sufficient power delivery. Sporting moments on the road from Lisbon to Setubal, but the top speed of 188 km / remains theoretical.

E-lettering and ice-blue shimmer for the e-208

Unbeatable in terms of acceleration, of course, remains the e-208, which differs from its Brennenner brothers only by the e-lettering on the C-pillar and an ice-blue glow in the radiator grille. With its input gearbox, it handles the spurt from 0 to 100 km / h with a maximum torque of 260 Nm in just 8,1 seconds. The joy of driving is somewhat clouded by the suffering at the domestic power outlet, where the electric version of the 208 sucks more than 24 hours. On a fast charging station with 100 kW it goes without saying with 30 minutes faster, but even in Germany, the offer is rather negligible.

On request, the Peugeot 208 teilautonom

The prices for the new Peugeot 208 start at 15.490 euros, for the most powerful gasoline engine you should have 19.995 euros and for the diesel 19.850 euros on hand.Environmental activists have to invest at least 2018 euros in the e-2020, which will only be available from dealers from 30.450. Even the basic version of the 208 always has an audio system, front collision warning and traffic sign recognition, the next level Allure then comes up with the 3D cockpit, aluminum wheels and the three driving modes ECO, Normal and Sport. If you keep your wallet open, you can explore the world almost semi-autonomously with the little 208. With the adaptive cruise control ACC with Stop & Go function including traffic jam assistant in connection with the eight-speed transmission, with which the distance to the vehicle in front can be automatically adjusted and active lane departure warning, you can safely take your foot off the accelerator and take your hands off the steering wheel for a few seconds .
