The Cayenne already proved that an SUV can also be a real Porsche. His younger brother Macan follows in his sporty footsteps and makes a pretty solid appearance at the TÜV.
Porsche and SUV: What led to lively discussions with the first Cayenne turned out to be a matter of course with the Macan debut in 2014 - sports car and SUV - that fits. The Cayenne's little brother, named after a word for Tiger, established itself as a customer favorite right from the start and even overtook the successful Cayenne.
Body and interior: With a length of 4,68 meters, the Macan keeps a respectful distance from the Cayenne (4,92 meters), making it much more manageable. Visually, the Zuffenhausen-based company, who is closely related to the Audi Q5, manages to create a good mix of SUV and sports car elements. With its typical headlights, it is instantly recognizable as a Porsche. Particularly noticeable at the front is the hood pulled into the fender, which also surrounds the headlights. Relatively narrow, wide taillights with individual night graphics round off the successful overall picture. In contrast to its big brother, getting started is easier. The seats are mounted around 7 centimeters lower than on the Cayenne. The interior corresponds to the typical Porsche design language and, with the slightly rising center console, offers plenty of control buttons. The space is okay, theoretically there is room for up to five people in the Macan. The trunk volume varies between 550 and 1.500 liters, depending on the seat configuration.
With the facelift, there will be new aprons at the end of 2018, as well as the continuous strip of lights at the rear known from the Cayenne and Panamera. At the front, LED headlights replace the old halogen units even in the basic model. A more modern infotainment system with an 11-inch screen has found its way into the interior.
Motors and drive: There are three engines to choose from for the market launch: the two petrol and one diesel are six-cylinder. The 3,0-liter in the Macan S has an output of 250 kW / 340 hp, the turbo (3,6 liter) has 294 kW / 400 hp. With the performance package available from 2016, the output increases to 324 kW / 440 PS and 600 Nm. The 3,0-liter diesel (Macan S Diesel) has 190 kW / 258 hp. So there is plenty of power available, the sprint times of the models, which always have all-wheel drive and dual clutch transmission, are accordingly. The turbo masters the standard sprint in 4,6 seconds, not bad for an SUV that weighs just under 2 tons. Driving dynamics, steering precision and brakes are also typical of Porsche.
In 2015, Porsche is expanding its engine range to include the “GTS” model variant. With 265 kW / 360 PS, this is positioned between the top-of-the-range “Turbo” and the “S”. The sprint from zero to 100 km / h takes 5,2 seconds and the top speed is 256 km / h. The basic variant with a two-liter, four-cylinder petrol engine and 185 kW / 252 hp follows one year later. The standard sprint takes 6,7 seconds, the top speed is specified at 229 km / h, the standard consumption of 7,2 to 7,4 liters. This makes the basic version, known only as the “Macan”, by far the most economical gasoline engine range. The diesel offered until 2018 approved an average of 6,1 to 6,3 liters. However, this will be removed from the program at the beginning of 2018. Those interested in used diesel cars should make sure that the recall has been carried out because of unauthorized exhaust gas switching devices. As part of the facelift, the petrol range will be revised. The top model is the Macan Turbo with 324 kW / 440 PS from a 2,9 liter V6. Among them is the Macan S with 261 kW / 355 PS. The four-cylinder with 252 hp continues to be the entry-level petrol engine.
Equipment and safety: New car buyers invested at least 56.000 euros in the basic Macan. The equipment is therefore on a decent, but not outstanding, level. So there are only halogen headlights from the factory until the facelift. So it's not surprising that each model still offers room for improvement in terms of customization. Speaking of air: Air suspension is an alternative to steel suspension. With it, the ground clearance can be increased by 4 centimeters to 23 centimeters. Ceramic brakes, panoramic roof, performance package and many assistants also attract visitors. The 2014 Porsche SUV achieved five stars in the NCAP crash test.
Quality: The TÜV inspectors have found little to complain about so far. The Macan usually performs well in the disciplines of chassis, lights and brakes. The TÜV inspector only has to turn up his nose regularly when it comes to oil loss. The tiger is not always house trained and loses oil. Those interested in used cars should take a close look at their dream car.
At the end... The Macan is a real Porsche - sporty and not exactly cheap either. The latter is also reflected in the prices for used vehicles. Diesel models are available from around 30.000 euros on used car portals. The Macan and Macan S are offered from around 34.000 euros.
