However, only those flaws may be remedied that do not lead to technical or legal restrictions. Scratches in the paint surface may be repaired in the entire visible area of ​​the rim. Damage to a depth of one millimeter in the base metal, however, may only be removed if it is not more than five centimeters away from the outer flange of the rim in the radial direction. The rim must not have any cracks. Damage in the inner area of ​​the rim (since this is where the maximum power transmission takes place) and on the rim flange (tire sealing surface) are taboo. Rims that have already been reconditioned may not be reconditioned a second time.

The permitted embellishment of scratches is not recommended in every case. Among other things, the stripping of paint from rims by means of heat is considered controversial. The old paint is removed by treating it for several hours at over 200 degrees so that new paint can then be applied. The problem: Due to the heat treatment, the hardness of the material and the service life of the rim can suffer.

Rim repairs make sense for the TÜV?

If the damage to a rim goes beyond superficial scratches or peeling paint, it must be replaced. Because repairs with deeper intervention in the material, through reshaping or heat treatment, are prohibited for safety reasons. In the main inspection, this is assessed as a significant deficiency. Although repair procedures are offered on the workshop market, these are generally not permitted. Instead of expensive repairs, it is better to invest your money in a new rim straight away.

If you want to avoid expensive new rims purchases, you shouldn't choose the most sensitive specimens anyway. Even the smallest scratches can be seen from a distance on black painted wheels. And particularly sporty rims that protrude beyond the tire flank are already on the curb with the slightest inattention.
