New rules for drivers in 2022

There will be no mask requirement at the wheel in 2022 either. However, the anti-infection agents should be on board.

At the turn of the next year, drivers will have to observe new rules again. This time it's about driving licenses, Fuel costs and the mask requirement. An overview.

New assistants

From July 6th, new types of cars must be equipped with additional assistance systems. Among other things, an intelligent speed assistant (ISA) is required, which warns the driver if the current speed limit is exceeded. As a rule, the data from the camera-based traffic sign recognition should be used for this purpose. Other obligatory helpers include an emergency braking assistant and an emergency lane departure warning. In addition, an accident data memory (black box) and an interface for an alcohol-sensitive immobilizer will be mandatory.

For vehicles from 3,5 tons - i.e. before all vans and trucks - a turning assistant will be mandatory from 2022, which warns of accidents. Initially, the regulation will apply to new types, and from 2024 to all new vehicles.

Higher CO2 price

Fuel is likely to remain expensive in the coming year. On January 1st, the CO2 price increases to 30 euros per ton, which increases the price of a liter of petrol by 8,4 cents. Diesel will be 9,5 cents more expensive. How much fuel ultimately costs also depends on the development of the oil price.

Mask compulsory in the first-aid kit

The vehicle first-aid kit must in future contain two mouth-nose masks. A regulation of the federal government provides for this. It is still unclear when this will come into force.

Stricter eligibility criteria for plug-in hybrids

From January 1st, buyers of plug-in hybrids will only receive the e-car bonus if the model has a minimum electric range of 60 kilometers. Later, 80 kilometers are required - originally this should be the case in 2025, the new federal government now wants to be stricter as early as 2023. So far, the minimum value has been 40 kilometers or a maximum emission of 50 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The emission limit will remain unchanged in the coming year.

New rules for the driver's license too

Many old driver's licenses will lose their validity in the coming year. If you were born between 1953 and 1959 and still have a pink or gray document, you must exchange it for a forgery-proof check card driver's license by January 19th. It costs 25 euros and is valid for 15 years. Anyone who gets into a police check with an old driver's license pays a warning fee of 10 euros.
