Tire change guide

Easter is here. By now, at the latest, most Germans should change the tires on their car.

The old summer tires-The rule of thumb "from Easter to October" is as general as it is imprecise. In most parts of Germany, however, the time for the change should now have come at the latest. At most who over the holidays in a Ski Area drives or lives there, still needs winter tires. The most important questions and answers about the change.

Why should I switch at all?

The special rubber compound of winter tires, which tends to be softer, ensures higher fuel consumption and a longer braking distance when the outside temperature is warm. In addition, wear and tear increases. Summer tires, on the other hand, with their special, slightly firmer tread compound, offer more grip and enable shorter braking distances. Because they lack the saw-tooth elements in the profile, they also roll off much more quietly.

Where should I do the tire change?

If the summer tires are stored on rims in the garage, you can change them yourself with a little manual skill and the right tools. Anyone who doesn't want that, needs completely new tires or has had their seasonal tires stored, drives to the workshop. Depending on the company and place of residence, the mere exchange costs between 20 and 50 euros. Mounting and balancing costs extra.

How do I know if the tires are still good?

If you change tires yourself, you first check the old and new tires. If dents or cracks are visible, this is a safety risk and they must no longer be used. A profile that is too worn also requires the tire to be replaced. Experts recommend a minimum depth of 3 millimeters for summer tires and 4 millimeters for winter tires. The German legislator is satisfied with 1,6 millimeters. New copies are also due if the tires are more than eight years old. The age can be determined using the four-digit DOT number on the flank. The first two numbers stand for the week of production, the last two for the year. If the tires are worn out or too old, the only solution is to buy new ones.

Do all tires always have to be replaced?

The tires on the drive wheels often wear down faster. Then it's enough just to change them. It is best to use tires of the same type again. Regardless of the type of drive, the fresh pair is mounted on the rear axle, as it is responsible for driving stability. Mixing different tire models, types or even winter and summer tires is often permitted, but not recommended.

Which tires should I buy?

Anyone who needs a new set of tires can obtain information in advance, for example from current tire tests from car clubs or magazines. The EU tire label, which provides information about environmental compatibility, background noise and fuel efficiency, also offers orientation.

What about all-season tires?

The all-season models are always a compromise. In summer, they offer worse properties than real summer tires, in winter they are inferior to real winter tires. However, if you live in areas with little snow, generally drive little or leave the car parked anyway in winter weather, all-season tires will do just fine. The industry now offers a wide range of models and sizes.

What to think about after the change?

After mounting the wheels, check that the tire pressure is correct. The data is usually in the fuel filler cap, in the entrance to the driver's door or in the car's operating instructions. It is best to have a regular air pressure check for all tires at about every second refueling stop, at least once a month. If the vehicle still has a spare tire, this must also be checked occasionally. A tire can only have the best possible grip on the road and good braking properties if it has the correct air pressure. The integration of the tires into the vehicle electronics such as ESP also only works optimally with the air pressure specified by the car manufacturer.
