Because of problems with exhaust gas cleaning Seat Postpone the start of production for a diesel variant of the Ateca compact SUV. As the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” reported, the particularly popular front-wheel drive model with a displacement of two liters and 110 kW / 150 hp is affected by the delay; the manufacturer has already temporarily removed it from the list of model variants that can be ordered.
Contrary to the original plans, Seat now wants to equip the Ateca 2.0 TDI with an SCR catalytic converter that significantly reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The company does not yet say when delivery of the modified vehicle will begin. Customers who have already ordered the corresponding model should be given the opportunity to switch to a different variant. In addition, Seat wants to offer them "a mobility offer" until the new Ateca is delivered.
Seat does not comment on the type of emissions problem. But since improvements are being made with a NOx reduction system, the compact SUV is likely to have failed because of the limit values for this pollutant. The same gas triggered the Volkswagen scandal. Other versions of the Ateca are apparently not affected. In the all-wheel drive variant with the same engine, for example, an SCR catalytic converter was used from the start, while the 2WD model had to make do with the less powerful NOx storage catalytic converter. It is not yet clear whether the price of the front-wheel drive diesel will rise in view of the more complex technology that is now required. Most recently, the model cost 27.560 euros, the all-wheel drive version with SCR technology comes to 29.410 euros. (Holger Holzer / SP-X)
