Those interested in a combination can usually choose between practical utility, i.e. loading volume, and a chic design. After all, both aspects are seldom united under one body panel. But there are exceptions like the Skoda Octavia Combi RS. Not only does it look good, it also takes loads of loads (610 up to 1.740 liters). As the icing on the cake, the load carrier in the sporty RS version still offers a lot of driving fun, especially when it drives up with the 2,0-liter TSI with 162 kW / 220 PS, as with our everyday test vehicle, instead of the diesel that is also offered.

The engine is also used in the Golf GTI and similarly fast as the group brother, it is also in the RS to the point. A light kick on the accelerator pedal and the machine awakens, at first very quietly, with increasing pressure on the pedal also with appropriate sound accompaniment. Of course, it does not stop at the acoustic Munterwerden: The 220 PS storm, sometimes just counted to 7, you have already passed the 100-km / h mark, then it goes unchecked, on the highway at Tempo 242 end.

Sewers in construction sites may notice the two trapezoidal tailpipes and the RS logo. After lifting the speed limit, they both quickly disappear into the distance. Tjaaa, dear drivers, for information: RS stands for Rally Sport and yes, the tailpipes are real. Otherwise, the powerhouse, which is also available as a sedan, has the typical dynamic signaling attributes: black background headlights, red painted calipers, striking bumpers and air inlets, 18-inch alloy wheels and a spoiler, the combi version in the roof edge is integrated. Despite the more or less sustained martial ingredients, the Octavia is neither aggressive nor embarrassing. This impression is also confirmed when looking at the interior. The sports seats are not checked, but kept in lively black and give a good grip. Stainless steel pedals and sports steering wheel are also part of the standard RS equipment.

But the Czechs can’t just go straight ahead. Even robbers of curves have their fun. The vehicle can be steered quickly and precisely by turning. Meanwhile, the six-speed DSG harmoniously takes over the right gear selection. To ensure that driving skills and the laws of physics do not differ too much, Skoda has expanded the ESP to include the electronic transverse differential lock (XDS). It enables more traction.

When asked how high the consumption is, one can only answer: it depends. Full throttle driving on the freeway naturally lets the fuel needle move down faster than leisurely cruising. But even under full steam, the consumption did not exceed 9,7 liters, with a little reluctance - but still on the go - the on-board computer shows a value of 7,5 liters, which is not that far from the standard value of 6,4 liters . If you like it more economical, go for the 135 kW / 184 hp diesel unit, which is also offered for the RS. The engine known from the Golf GTD has an average consumption of 4,6 liters in the manual version, with DSG it is 5,1 liters.

Although the Octavia runs in the Skoda nomenclature under a compact model, due to its dimensions it actually belongs to the middle class. The Combi RS stretches to 4,69 meters in length. So there is plenty of space for both passengers and luggage. This makes him a family or leisure-time companion. Anyone interested in the Octavia Combi RS must invest at least 30.250 euros. The DSG costs an additional 2.000 euros. From the factory, the RS is equipped with, among other things, bi-xenon lights with adaptive headlights, LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights, automatic climate control, sports suspension, cruise control and heated front seats.

Of course, he also has the typical Skoda accessories such as ice scrapers in the tank lid, small trash can in the side shelf, warning vest holder under the driver's seat or a plug-in bracket for the smartphone in the center console on board. And of course there are also customization options in the RS. For example, the driver assistance package "Business Traveler" for 2.110 Euro. In addition to the navigation system, Bluetooth hands-free system and a luggage net partition, it also contains helpful assistants to take care of the distance or the high beam. And very important: The traffic signs and here especially the round, red outlined numbers are reliably displayed. An important tool to keep an eye on the pace of the law while enjoying all driving pleasure.
