Story without a happy ending: Phaeton Gen2

There are quite a few prototypes and concepts from car manufacturers that never see the light of day. One such top-secret project was the Phaeton D2, which is now being shown after all

For the first time, VW has published images of a potential successor to the Phaeton, a luxury model introduced in 2002. The luxury sedan discontinued in 2016 was originally supposed to have a successor, for which various designs were made. The most promising candidate was the Phaeton D2 designed by Jozef Kabaň, Marco Pavone and Tomasz Bachorski, from which a close-to-production and drivable concept vehicle based on the modular longitudinal matrix (MLB) was built.

It is a stately sedan with a gorgeous chrome grille and determined-looking headlight units. The sheet metal skin is characterized by various character lines and plenty of chrome decoration. The wide C-pillar is striking - a clear reference to the Phaeton 1. Inside, the Phaeton D2 offers a digital cockpit with two large displays. In terms of color, light leather, black high-gloss surfaces and dark brown wood applications dominate the interior. The rear with rear entertainment system has its own glass roof opening.

Even six years after its construction, the D2 looks modern. In 2016, however, VW's brand board decided against a new edition of the Phaeton. At that time, shortly after the start of the diesel crisis, a number of things in the VW Group were under scrutiny. Officially, it is said that the luxury model no longer fits into the new VW e-mobility strategy.
