"Tesla effect" ensures strong performance growth

The average performance of the cars sold in Germany has been growing for decades. Last year she did that particularly well.

The performance of German new cars rose by leaps and bounds last year. On average, the cars achieved the previous record of 165 hp, as the Center of Automotive Research (CAR) has determined. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of 7 hp. Institute director Ferdinand Dudenhöffer attributes the relatively high plus in a long-term comparison to the "Tesla effect": The models of the e-car brand in particular, but also many plug-in hybrids from other manufacturers, are more powerfully motorized than the conventional average car . In addition, there are other effects such as the sustained boom in heavy and correspondingly powerfully motorized SUVs and an increase in horsepower, especially for company cars.

The development towards ever more powerful engines has been going on for decades. In 1990 the average power was 92 hp, in 1997 it already exceeded the 100 hp mark. Dudenhöffer also cites a prominent example: “Today, the new German cars have 35 hp or 27 percent more powerful engines than the Porsche 911 of 1973.
