Test: Infiniti Q30

In order to separate the wheat from the chaff, the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan founded its “luxury brand” INFINITI in 1989. Sales started in Europe in 2008. Initially, attempts to market vehicles seemed rather hesitant. “First of all just be present”. With the Q series, however, you want to turn the tide. Initially present in the luxury class with the Q50, Q60 and Q70 models, the Japanese rounded off their portfolio, represented by the Q30, “downwards” into the compact class. The compact car based on the Mercedes Benz A-Class has been on tour in Europe since January 2016 and the package is now complete with the Q30 Sport and the QX30 crossover. The ambitions of Japanese luxury engineers are confident and bold. They only run with two petrol and diesel engines and two transmissions. The Q30 2.0t AWD Sport we tested starts in car dealerships with a price of 40.290 euros.

Review: Infiniti Q30 2.0t DCT AWD

Japanese star in the A-Class
Vehicle with a strong appearance.

The Japanese manufacturer is marketing its manageable range in 10 completed Infiniti centers in Germany. For this reason, the parent company based in Switzerland wants to make drastic changes by April 2018. A total of 25 centers are to be installed in Germany by then. The compact Q30 with its dynamically progressive design has been launched in the C segment since the beginning of last year. The double-arched grill, which makes the compact with its front view massive and wide on the street, is unmistakable. The strikingly curved bead that connects the front and the rear, plus a lower ground clearance compared to the basic models, also give the Q30t 2.0 DCT AWD its sporty note.

Ambience in the luxury area.

High dynamics

The turbo-charged 2.0 liter gasoline engine with its 155 kW (211 hp) and the very flexible seven-speed dual clutch transmission and automatic start-stop system consumed an economical 6,7 liters of super gasoline in the standard test, which corresponds to carbon dioxide emissions of 156 grams per kilometer. The unit never seems overwhelmed in the test and brings a powerful 1.200 Newton meters to the crankshaft between 4.000 to 350 tours, which gives it a convincing aplomb. In the test, the Q30 also coped with potholes and bumps with ease, looks very stable overall and offers comfortable handling. Nevertheless, it is on the list of efficient vehicles with the specified values rather in the good average. In the everyday flow of traffic, the specified consumption value, also due to driving pleasure, cannot quite be maintained. We need an average of 14 liters per 7,4 kilometers over the course of the overall test (use of urban, rural and motorway traffic) for 100 days.

Pleasant ambience with plenty of space

Thanks to its compact dimensions and wheelbase of 2,7 meters, the Q30 is easy to navigate in dense city traffic. In the interior design, the good workmanship of the seats stands out, which, among other things, offer effective lateral support. The rest of the interior is of high quality. The expected hard plastic in Japanese vehicles has long been softened plastic and suede surfaces with filigree seams, which in turn invite to test the feel. The cockpit is also clearly designed and intuitive to use. The seated in the middle of the dashboard display is used to display the navigation map, back- front and overview camera, as well as phone settings and mirror link for applications. If the seating is set precisely, this ensures a proper all-round view. Not only does the atmosphere have a harmonious effect, there is also generous space for the arms, legs and head, in the front seats as well as in the rear. The entry and exit is also convenient thanks to quite large door openings. In his trunk can be stowed without modification up to 430 liter. The wide tailgate opening ensures the accommodation of two large suitcases. The 60: 40 split folding rear seats create extra space for larger cargo. Contrary to the current trend, the trunk lid must still be operated manually.

Long standard equipment list.

Equipment variants with a lot of standard equipment

The Infiniti Q30 has a wide range of equipment ex works. The first equipment variant, "Basic", has seven airbags, a touchscreen infotainment system, on-board computer, LED daytime running lights, adaptive brake assist, hill start assist, electronic parking brake, exterior mirrors with LED indicators and ambient lighting on the exterior mirror. In the equipment variants "Premium" and "Premium Tech" there are comfort features such as 18-inch aluminum rims, cruise control with speed limiter, two-zone automatic air conditioning, heated front seats, adaptive headlights (AFS - Adaptive Front-lighting System), Smart Beam (automatic switching between remote and Dipped beam) and LED headlights with automatic level control. Unfortunately, the Japanese generally have a tough policy of surcharges. The update from the “basic” to the “premium” version is available for 2.890 euros and the further jump to the “premium tech” equipment for 4.570 euros. Above all, the Q30 2.0t AWD Sport serves as the top model. It rounds off the overall Q30 package with 19-inch aluminum rims, sports brakes and suspension, and an overall sports design package. Infiniti calls for 40.290 euros for this variant. Additional option packages such as the “technology package” (€ 1.170 - automatic parking assistant with all-round view monitor and moving object detection) and the “safety package” (€ 2.050 - blind spot assistant and adaptive cruise control) are also available.

And finally ... The Q30 makes the picture of the Infiniti family really round. The Japanese car manufacturer offers with the compact in the sports variant a high degree of customization. Not only the vehicle itself stands for the title "Premium".
